It was announced on Tuesday (May 12) that a new jukebox musical featuring songs by the Grammy Award-winning parodist is being developed. Titled Dare to Be Stupid: The Weird Al Musical , the new production will feature an original story written by the Tony Award-nominated duo Scott Brown and Anthony King ( Beetlejuice ) in partnership with “Weird Al” himself. Tony winner Alex Timbers ( Moulin Rouge! The Musical ) will direct the Seaview-produced show.
“Ever since I was a middle-aged man, I’ve always wanted to be a part of the New York theatre community,” said Yankovic in a press statement announcing the musical. “Plus, the one thing people always say about Broadway is that it’s ‘severely lacking in Weird Al-based entertainment,’ and I think this musical should fix that problem immediately.”
That problem will certainly be fixed alright. Dare to Be Stupid —named after Yankovic’s 1985 album—will feature tracks from Yankovic’s 40-plus-year career. Audiences can likely expect to hear Yankovic’s most beloved parodies such as his Billboard Hot 100 hits “Eat It” (a parody of Michael Jackson’s “Beat It”), “Amish Paradise” (a spoof of “Gangsta’s Paradise” by Coolio) and “Like a Surgeon” (Yankovic’s take on Madonna’s “Like a Virgin”).
“I first fell in love with Al’s music with the release of Dare to Be Stupid and have remained an avid fan ever since,” said Timbers. “Now, it’s a dream come true to work with one of my comedy heroes bringing an original story set to his beloved songbook to the stage. What Al, Anthony and Scott are creating is unexpected, subversive, meta and hilarious and I can’t wait for the world to experience it.” More production details, as well as a timeline for Dare To Be Stupid , have yet to be announced.
In 2022, Daniel Radcliffe starred as the man himself in Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, a parody of musician biopics. In June 2025, Yankovic covered Billboard’s Indie Power Issue.
