“I’m so excited to join the great John Du Prez on stage at the Greek to celebrate the 27th anniversary of the 10th anniversary of the release of UHF,” says Yankovic. “This will truly be a once-in-a-lifetime experience.”
Orion Pictures released UHF on July 21, 1989 and it would go on to become a cult classic. The movie follows George Newman (Yankovic), who can't seem to hold a job for more than 24 hours. But, after his Uncle Harvey wins a tiny ‘UHF’ television station in a poker game, he names George its new manager and, to no surprise, hilarious hijinks ensue.
In addition to Yankovic in the leading role, the film co-starred film veteran Kevin McCarthy , Seinfeld’s Michael Richards , Fran Drescher , David Bowe, Gedde Wattanabe, Billy Barty , Anthony Geary , Trinidad Silva, Stanley Brock , John Paragon , Vance Colvig, Sue Ane Langdon , David Proval , Emo Philips, and SNL cast member Victoria Jackson.
The movie was co-written by Al Yankovic and Jay Levey, directed by Jay Levey, and produced by Gene Kirkwood (Rocky, The Pope of Greenwich Village, Ironweed) and John Hyde (Das Boot, Flight of the Navigator, The Final Countdown) for Cinecorp, and Gray Frederickson (The Godfather I, II & III, Apocalypse Now, The Outsiders).
"Weird Al" Yankovic is a 5-time Grammy Award-winning musician, producer, writer, actor and satirist best known for his indelible song and music video parodies such as “Amish Paradise,” “Eat It,” “Smells Like Nirvana,” “White & Nerdy,” and “Word Crimes.” The biggest-selling comedy recording artist of all time, his last album, Mandatory Fun was the first comedy album in history to debut at #1 on the Billboard chart.
His movie WEIRD: The Al Yankovic Story (which he produced and co-wrote) starred Daniel Radcliffe as Al, and received 8 nominations and 2 wins at the 2023 Emmy Awards. He is currently on his 90-date Bigger & Weirder Tour, a continuation of last year’s 67-city run where he sold out massive venues such as LA’s Kia Forum, Red Rocks and Madison Square Garden.
A jukebox musical featuring Yankovic's songs, titled Dare to Be Stupid: The Weird Al Musical, is being developed for the stage. Tony Award-winner Alex Timbers will direct the musical, which features an original story penned by Tony Award-nominated writing duo Scott Brown and Anthony King and Al Yankovic.
A Grammy Award-winning composer, John Du Prez has scored over 20 feature films including A Fish Called Wanda, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles I-III, Once Bitten & The Meaning of Life. In 2001, he co-wrote Monty Python’s Spamalot with Eric Idle , which won the 2005 Tony Award for Best Musical.
