21 New Songs From Tierra Whack, Hot Chip, Trashcan Sinatras, and More Out Today

Here’s a roundup of recent tour news. Check the  Tour Dates  category for more.

TIERRA WHACK – “WAX PAPER”

Tierra Whack’s new mixtape, WHACK’S MUSEUM , is out Friday and here’s one more early taste before you get to dig into the whole thing. “WAX PAPER” has a woozy ’90s feel and a stylish video (as usual).

SONDRE LERCHE – “FOLLOW THE RIVER”

“‘Follow The River’ started life as a small, simple song when I wrote it at home on my acoustic guitar,” Sondre says of this epic from his upcoming album Acrobats . “But with each verse the story grew into a flamboyant dance pop-odyssey, 9 minutes long in its sprawling album version. By the end of it I had to call in my friend singer Suzanne Sumbundu to provide a rousing gospel style choir and adlibs.”

SEMISONIC – “DON’T GIVE UP YET”

“I started writing ‘Don’t Give Up Yet’ for a friend of mine who was going through a terrible chapter,” Dan Wilson says of the first Semisonic music in three years. “I wanted to tell him he still had time and there still was hope. When I got to the second verse, I realized the song was about something else, too – the fight against the dark philosophy that has stormed our country, our institutions, our freedom, our peace. That’s when the line ‘A king on a throne, Tyrannicus Rex,’ suddenly arrived and my band had a very different song on our hands. My friends have asked me why it’s ‘Don’t Give Up YET,’ rather than simply ‘Don’t Give Up.’ I tell them that the ‘yet’ means this: ‘Keep trying – don’t lose heart – you’re so close! Keep your hopes alive, because you’re going to make things better in the end. As they say in baseball, it’s not over yet. So don’t give up yet.’ My wish is that someone who hears the song will take heart and remember that there is still time and that if they keep trying, they’re going to change the world.”

SHOCK CORRIDOR – “SPIT TAKE”

Australian sextet Shock Corridor have announced their self-titled debut album which will be out August 5. It was produced by Dan Luscombe (Amyl and the Sniffers’ Comfort to Me ) they’ve just shared this new single. “Spit Take was our attempt at a party track,” say the band. “In a lot of ways, it’s just the slivers of apprehensions and nervousness that dwell under a night out, which in true Shock Corridor fashion we chose to emphasise and bring to the forefront lyrically. In doing so it, to us, has an “end of the world” feeling to it. Like the songs before it, Spit Take exists in the Anthropocene and doesn’t shy away from the feeling of uncertainty over our own mortality and how long we truly have left. The song is set between rooms and staircases of house party where everybody’s aware of this looming fear. Just like real life.”

ELEPHANT STONE – “FASCISTS KILLED YER ROCK ‘N’ ROLL”

Montreal psych-rock vets Elephant Stone will release new album ASHA in August and here is their politically charged first single. “You’d have to be living under a rock to ignore what’s happening,” says frontman Rishi Dhir. “I don’t claim to have the answers; this song is about giving the threat a name. It’s a reminder that we’ve seen this script before… and we’ve overcome it before.”

HOT CHIP – “SO DEEP”

Hot Chip are giving The Warning, Made In The Dark and One Life Stand their first-ever vinyl reissues in July and all come with a digital bonus disc full of rare and unreleased material. “So Deep” is one of the Made in the Dark bonus tracks. “I hadn’t listened to this song ‘So Deep’ for many years and listening today was a strange experience,” says the band’s Joe Goddard. “I enjoyed the naivety of the mix; my pitch shifted vocals sounded kind of amateurish but endearing. It feels a little similar to a Patrick Cowley track, funky in a pretty raw and chaotic way. I remember making bass sounds using the ARP 2600 and the drum beat using Linn drum samples, which also gives the song a sonic similarity to Prince.”

IMMERSION (WIRE/MINIMAL COMPACT) – “MEGAFAUNA”

Wire’s Colin Newman and Minimal Compact’s Malka Spiegel are releasing their new Immersion album, What Is Lost Will Return , on September 4 via their own swim~ label. “Megafauna” has distinct Joy Division feels and Immersion say: “The title ‘Megafauna’ reflects the music – lumbering large creatures moving slowly to the beat and are drawn to the sound of a primordial piper.”

CASE/LANG/VEIRS – “ACCIDENTAL TATTOO”

Neko Case, k.d. lang, and Laura Veirs released their collab album 10 years ago and to celebrate they’ve unearthed this unused outtake.

MESH – “VIOLENT PEASANT”

Philly quartet Mesh formed five years ago but are only just now getting around to releasing their debut album, No Fun At All , which will be out July 24. Fans of Uranium will want to hit play on “Violent Peasant.”

KIWI JR. – “PURE MICHIGAN”

“I‘d been trying to write a song about the Detroit-Windsor border for a couple of years; American kids crossing the bridge to the Canadian bars because the drinking age is two years lower,” says Kiwi Jr’s Jeremy Gaudet of the band’s jangly new single. “Once we had the studio dates in Detroit booked to record the album, it became really important for us to finish writing the song, because it was too topical to miss. Some friends from Michigan helped get the details in the lyrics right. Mike directed the video, which was shot between Detroit and Windsor with some small digital cameras this spring.” New album Blowin’ Up is out 8/14 on K/ Perennial.

TRASHCAN SINATRAS – “GAMES FOR THE ZX SPECTRUM”

Scottish pop greats Trashcan Sinatras will release their first album in 10 years, Ever The Optimist, on July 31. Their way with a melody and turn of phrase is just as sharp as ever on this single.

CAPTAIN MURPHY (FLYING LOTUS) – “MUDHOLE”

Captain Murphy, Flying Lotus’s rap alter ego, features on the soundtrack for wild new Hong Kong action film The Furious . “Mudhole” features production by Little Snake.

MAXO KREAM – “TIME OUT” (PROD JPEGMAFIA)

Maxo Kream’s new album O.Y.N is out next week.

DALE CROVER – “HARVEST MOON” (NEIL YOUNG COVER)

Dale’s new solo EP ‘ Get Yer Ba-Ba’s Out ’ opens with this cover, and did you know he played a young Neil Young in the original 1992 video for “Harvest Moon”?

SAUL WILLIAMS – “CONSPIRACY” FT MOOR MOTHER & GONJASUFI

Saul Williams is back and will release new album Leap Life on August 28 via Big Dada. It’s his first in seven years and was made with longtime collaborator Carlos Niño, and the album features contributions from Robert Del Naja (Massive Attack‘s 3D), Kamasi Washington, Moor Mother, Gonjasufi, Georgia Anne Muldrow and Surya Botofasina.

FATHERS (KENNY BEATS, NATE SMITH, MORE) – “PEARL”

In addition to being one of the most sought-after producers of the moment (Vince Staples, Geese more), Kenny Beats (real name: Kenneth Blume) is also a member of FATHERS, a quartet featuring three jazz heavyweights: keyboardist Kiefer (Kiefer Shackelford), bassist CARRTOONS (Ben Carr), and drummer Nate Smith. Their debut album . is out July 10.

TRUCK VIOLENCE – “GERARD, BE QUIET”

Most of Montreal band Truck Violence ‘s songs are ragers, but this one shows their more introspective side.

PERENNIAL – “WHAT’S NEW ON THE BEAT SCENE”

New England mod dance punks Perennial have announced new album Modernism which will be out September 18 and this first single is a very catchy banger.

SAD13 – “I AM NOW COMPLETELY INVISIBLE,” “ART INSTITUTE,” “WATERMELON MANICURE”

It’s been a few years since we’ve had new music from Sadie Dupuis, whether with her band Speedy Ortiz or with her Sad13 solo project, and she’s now announced a new mixtape from the latter. 1331 features “1 minute long-ish songs,” and here are three of them.
