Cody Simpson Cancels Shows Due to Serious Vocal Cord Hemorrhage

Cody Simpson has hit an unexpected roadblock as he promotes new music and closes in on finishing his next album. The Australian singer revealed on Monday (May 11) that he suffered “a serious hemorrhage” on one of his vocal cords, causing him to seek medical treatment and go on strict vocal rest to avoid further injury while still continuing to work on his next batch of songs.

Sharing a selfie from what appears to be a doctor’s office laden with CDs and music plaques signed by various artists on the walls, Simpson began by writing, “I originally thought I could keep this private but it’s come time I share what I’ve been going through.”
He went on to explain that he was diagnosed with the hemorrhage “just over a month ago,” learning at the time that it had been caused by his “overzealousness in the studio singing through a sinus infection” he didn’t know he had. “Assumed it was just fatigue and kept showing up to the studio until one day I could no longer sing,” he continued. “I’ve now been on and off vocal rest for weeks, cancelling TV and radio performances.”
Simpson noted that his condition has inhibited him from promoting new single “Baby Blue,” which dropped in March.
“This has also affected my ability to complete the album and polish up the next singles,” he added. “I’ve just been prescribed another 2 weeks of silence in hopes of avoiding a surgery which demands a much longer recovery process. I’m back in the studio now writing strictly as a lyricist on mute with my collaborators, and hearing/writing my vocal melodies on my guitar (which I will eventually replace with my voice when I’m able to). Where there’s a will, there’s a way.”
He now plans on sharing his recovery process with fans — many of whom sent positive thoughts his way in the comments of his post — instead of keeping it under wraps. The setback comes as Simpson was working to follow up his self-titled fourth studio album, which he dropped in 2022 amid the four years he spent pursuing competitive swimming. Before announcing his retirement from the sport, he qualified for the 2022 Commonwealth Games and the 2024 Australian Olympic Trials.
In March, BMG announced that it had signed Simpson in partnership with Range Music for his future releases. “Post-swimming career, I’d been back experimenting in the studio for almost a year,” he said in a statement at the time. “One day I went in really open-minded sensing something new and fresh wanted to come through … Coming back to music I decided I only wanted to do it if I could go in and have the best time ever everyday.”
