The film has been in the works since early last year , originally operating under the title  New Years Rev . Co-produced by the band, it will follow three friends who embark on a road trip in the mistaken belief that they have secured a Green Day support slot at a New Year’s Eve show.

The events of the movie are inspired by the group’s real-life adventures on the road before their 1994 breakthrough album ‘Dookie’, and  last month it was confirmed that it had been renamed as  Nimrods , in reference to Green Day’s 1997 album ‘Nimrod’.

It premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last year under its previous title, and earlier this week (May 12), production company Inaugural Entertainment announced that Nimrods  will be released in US cinemas on August 14.

It is directed by Lee Kirk and will star Mason Thames ( The Black Phone ,  How To Train Your Dragon ) and Mckenna Grace ( Scream 7 ,  Regretting You ), as well as Fred Armisen, Kylr Coffman, Ryan Foust, Jenna Fischer and Bobby Lee.

Shortly after the project was announced,  Green Day put out a casting call for some of its scenes , seeking out “punks, emo, hardcore, alternative and rocker young adults” aged between 18 and 30.  They then released the first trailer last September .

Green Day made headlines earlier this year when they  played the Super Bowl opening ceremony  at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, on February 8.

Billie Joe Armstrong and co. performed a medley of classic songs from their back catalogue, including the politically charged ‘American Idiot’. Armstrong did not, however, sing the tweaked line “I’m not part of the MAGA agenda”  as he has done at recent shows.

The trio’s reluctance to make any political statement was a surprise to many , with some taking to social media to express their disappointment at the perceived missed opportunity.
