Katy Perry Reacts to Ex Josh Groban’s Engagement
Katy Perry offers a humorous response to the engagement of Josh Groban, who she previously identified as the inspiration for her 2010 hit song "The One That Got Away."

This year, Katy Perry ‘s hit “The One That Got Away” has experienced a resurgence thanks to the track trending on TikTok, which comes at a fitting time, given that the person it’s about, Josh Groban, just got engaged.

And in a satiric TikTok posted by the pop star on Monday (May 11), she hilariously reacts to her former flame’s happy news by theatrically “crying” fake tears with an article about the opera singer’s engagement displayed in the background. She also pours herself an absurdly large drink and sips it, looking despondent as it spills over onto her bathrobe.
Of course, she had to pair it with “The One That Got Away.” “congrats,” she simply wrote in the caption, along with a champagne-glass emoji.
Groban announced in April that he’d popped the question to his girlfriend, theater actress Natalie McQueen. “MY BEST FRIEND SAID YES!!!” he wrote on Instagram at the time.
Perry’s reaction a couple weeks later is clearly all in good fun, especially given her own romance with Justin Trudeau. She and the former Canadian prime minister started dating last year, and the hitmaker has since shared numerous photo s of herself and Trudeau looking happily in love on Instagram.
That said, Groban will always be, well, the one that got away. Perry confirmed in conversation with James Corden during a livestream in 2017 that she penned the Teenage Dream single — which reached No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 — about the Broadway star, whom she briefly dated around 2009.
“I was not expecting that,” Groban later responded on Watch What Happens Live in 2018. “That was a double take and a spit of my coffee. It’s very sweet of her to say that.”
Her cheeky TikTok is one of a few ways Perry and her team have been promoting “The One That Got Away” amid its renaissance. In April, she released an extended director’s cut of the song’s cinematic music video, as well as dropped an EP titled Thinking of the One That Got Away that repackaged the single with another one of her older songs that’s been trending lately: “Thinking of You.”
