Live Nation & Academy Music Group Invest $12M in Brighton Hippodrome Revival

Academy Music Group Limited (AMG), part of Live Nation Entertainment, has signed an agreement to operate the historic Brighton Hippodrome, and to bring this renowned UK venue back to life.

A Grade II listed building, located in Middle Street, the Brighton Hippodrome has been vacant since 2006. Under this agreement, AMG will reopen the Hippodrome as a performance venue once again.

Brighton-based family business Matsim Properties purchased the building in 2020 and has since undertaken extensive restoration work. This includes installing a new roof to protect the venue’s iconic circular auditorium and ornate ceiling, which make it one of the most architecturally significant circus theatres in the UK, as well as increasing its capacity from 1,800 to 2,300, according to local news reports, which also state that the scheduled reopening is in 2027.

Live Nation and AMG are investing £9.5 million ($12.7 million) as part of a wider redevelopment project, representing a total investment of £25 million ($33.5 million) to restore and modernize the venue.

“This funding will deliver essential upgrades to infrastructure and facilities, ensuring the Hippodrome can host more incredible performances while preserving its historic character,” according to the press announcement.

Blueprint Studio, Live Nation’s in-house global design and development group, is leading the interior fit out alongside Burrell Foley Fischer (architect), Charcoalblue (venue designer) and Matsim (developer and property owner).

Opened in 1901, the Brighton Hippodrome was converted from a skating rink by renowned theatre architect Frank Matcham and later became a major Variety Theatre, hosting legendary acts including Charlie Chaplin, Laurel and Hardy, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and Sammy Davis Jr.
