Mass Effect Creator Criticizes “Soulless” AI and 100+ Hour Games

Mass Effect creator Casey Hudson has hit out at the use of “soulless” AI in video games and isn’t a fan of titles that take hundreds of hours to complete.

Hudson is currently working on new Star Wars game Fate Of The Old Republic , which is set to launch sometime before 2030.
However, he won’t be relying on generative AI to help meet that deadline. “I just find AI to be creatively soulless,” he told Bloomberg . “It’s hard to imagine where it’s actually helpful in the process. I’m just really unimpressed with it.”
He also said Star Wars: Fate Of The Old Republic won’t be as long as Elden Ring or Crimson Desert , which both take hundreds of hours to complete. “Bigger isn’t necessarily better. If I’m excited about a game and then I find out that it’s 200 hours long — even if I have no ambition to actually finish it — I wonder, if I put 20 hours in, will I even be out of act one? A lot of players just want to play something and finish it.”
Star Wars: Fate Of The Old Republic was announced at The Game Awards in December. The narrative-driven, single-player role-playing-game is the spiritual successor to the beloved Knights Of The Old Republic but will feature a new cast of characters.
“The fate of the galaxy is in your hands [when] you step into the role of a Force user on a journey through a galaxy on the edge of rebirth,” reads the official description of the game. “Blending innovative storytelling, memorable characters, and heart-pounding combat, Star Wars: Fate Of The Old Republic immerses you in an unforgettable experience where every decision deepens your journey toward light or darkness.”
Hudson has also promised that the game will launch before 2030 . “Don’t worry about the ‘not till 2030’ rumours. Game will be out before then,” he wrote on social media. “I’m not getting any younger.”
In other news, a new Dead Space game will probably never happen because there’s just not enough demand, says former writer and producer Chuck Beaver. “It wasn’t like it didn’t get a run out of it [but] it’s disappointing that we can’t take a beloved franchise to its logical end.”
