Minecraft Movie Sequel "Squared" to Explore Game Lore More Deeply

The title of the A Minecraft Movie sequel has been revealed alongside a new behind-the-scenes clip that promises the film will go “deeper” than the original.

A Minecraft Movie was released in 2025 and became the highest grossing movie of the year thanks to a number of viral moments . An untitled sequel was announced shortly afterwards , alongside a release date of July 23, 2027.

Over the weekend it was confirmed that the sequel will be called A Minecraft Movie Squared . A new behind-the-scenes video was also released giving fans their first look at Kirsten Dunst’s take on OG Minecraft protagonist Alex .

“There is a lot of new in this movie. There’s a massive team hard at work to take this production to the next level but we got some old friends returning as well,” explained Jack Black (who plays Steve).

“In this movie, we are taking you so much deeper into the Minecraft world – new biomes, new characters and new mobs along with some of my favourites,” said Danielle Brooks (Dawn).

The video also confirmed Matt Berry would be playing a bigger role in A Minecraft Movie Squared . He was originally set to play Steve in the original film before dropping out due to scheduling conflicts, but did voice Jennifer Coolidge’s love interest Nitwit.

“I’ve been told I’m not allowed to tell you who I’m playing in this movie,” said Berry before someone attempts to hand him a blue sweater vest. “That’s no turquoise. Steve would not be wearing that,” he replied. Fans are now convinced he’ll play an evil version of Steve known as Herobrine , who comes straight from Minecraft urban legend.

Earlier this year, it was rumoured Ariana Grande had been cast in A Minecraft Movie Squared after she started following Black on Instagram but nothing has been confirmed.

A Minecraft Movie Squared will hit cinemas July 23 and see the return of Jack Black (Steve), Jason Momoa (Garrett ‘The Garbage Man’ Garrison), Danielle Brooks (Dawn), Matt Berry (Villager) and Jennifer Coolidge (Marlene). There’s no word yet on whether Emma Myers (Natalie) or Sebastian Eugene Hansen (Henry) will return.

In other news, the team behind Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 4  have promised the shooter won’t have any “bullshit” celebrity cameos or unrealistic skins.
