The six presenting companies – Repercussion Theatre , Infinithéâtre, Talisman Theatre, Imago Theatre, Geordie Theatre, and Black Theatre Workshop – unveiled a season centred on bringing bold new stories of empowerment to the forefront, uplifting marginalized voices, and fostering community through cultural exchange.
Two exciting new productions are coming to the Montreal stages. In co-production with the Sound of Dogs collective, Imago Theatre brings a powerful story of Deaf culture to the spotlight with the world premiere of Sound of Dogs. Blending American Sign Language with spoken English, movement, and a vivid digital landscape, the piece celebrates the beauty and complexity of Deaf culture.
Another co-production was announced by Talisman Theatre and Infinithéâtre: the English-language premiere of Noli. Exploring themes of sexuality, intimacy, and the search for one's authentic self, the work celebrates erotic art and sex-positivity as vehicles for empowerment.
Indigenous stories will take centre stage with Imago Theatre's Akuteu, co-produced with AUEN: a visceral, poetically raw portrait of a young Innu woman exploring her identity as she navigates a predominantly white society. Geordie Theatre also announced a nationwide tour of its award-winning production of Jordan, bringing the inspiring story of Jordan River Anderson to audiences across Canada.
Black Theatre Workshop will remount its production of Taking Care of Maman with a season entitled “tête-à-tête” – an invitation to crucial conversations about the realities and aspirational ideals of Black identity. This year again, its annual Artist Mentorship Program continues as a national initiative supporting Black, Indigenous, and POC theatre makers.
Repercussion Theatre's The Winter's Tale will offer a fresh take on the classic Shakespearean play. Set in an enchanting Nubian-futuristic world, the production is created by an all Black and Brown cast, designers, and director.
Geordie Theatre's season of “Stories that Move” promises productions that will spark emotional connection, reflection, and imagination. Horseplay will be the mainstage offering, while Nohkom's Knick Knacks and Hooligan Theory will be presented as part of the 2Play tour, bringing live theatre directly to elementary and high schools across Québec and the Maritimes. The company also continues to offer multi-level workshops, camps, as well as after-school, evening, and weekend classes through the Geordie Theatre School.
A shared ambition expressed by multiple companies this year is the fostering of connections between francophone and anglophone theatre artists and audiences in Montreal. Talisman Theatre and Infinitheatre's Noli, as well as Imago Theatre's Akuteu are both English premieres of French plays. Infinithéâtre also announced that its original creation Whalefall, which premiered this winter, is currently being translated to reach French-speaking audiences.
Some companies are presenting their work in both languages. Repercussion Theatre's Swashbuckling / De cape et d'épée will feature alternating French and English performances throughout its run, while Black Theatre Workshop's Taking Care of Maman will be remounted in both English and French, as it tours in Ontario and Saskatchewan before returning to Montreal.
Bilingual programs for theatre artists are also being offered to deepen creative exchange. Repercussion Theatre announced an exciting new initiative for playwrights, Table Collective, which will be hosted completely in Frenglish to encourage dialogue between the two linguistic communities. Black Theatre Workshop also shared its intention of offering the Artist Mentorship Program in both French and English this season, with the goal of building a cohort that is at least 50% Francophone.
The MTL Launch left attendees inspired by the spirit of collaboration and the promise of a bold, diverse, and imaginative 26/27 season. As these six companies look ahead, they do so with a shared commitment to storytelling that empowers and uplifts – a testament to the vitality of Montreal's English-language theatre scene.
