Phoebe Bridgers Debuts New Songs, Announces Tour at Intimate MSG Show
Phoebe Bridgers treated fans to new music and an intimate atmosphere at Madison Square Garden, where she also revealed plans for a fall tour.

When Phoebe Bridgers began her run of surprise, intimate shows in Roswell, New Mexico early in May, it quickly became clear that it was an ongoing series rather than a one-off thing. It seemed just as clear to me that there would be no NYC show: the logistics of the announcements, which happened via signage in cafes and other local haunts and quickly made it to the internet, seemed like they would be immediately overwhelmed by NYC’s population density, which would enable hundreds if not thousands of curious onlookers to line up immediately in addition to fans. In addition to happening in places with reputations for extraterrestrial activity (for an added fun wrinkle, the announcement of the Roswell show lined up with the Pentagon’s release of UFO files), the shows happened in smaller cities and towns, places Phoebe hadn’t been before on tour. NYC fits neither bill. When Madison Square Garden was announced earlier this week, it felt both like a potential grand finale to the series, and the only way to bring this intimate concept to NYC.
An intimate show at Madison Square Garden feels contradictory, but as much as it’s possible, Phoebe pulled it off. She brought the same cozy set dressing she’d used throughout May — a couch with a blanket, neon black light alien art, a television tuned to static, lava lamps — and the same longtime collaborators with her, Christian Lee Hutson on guitar, harmonica, and backing vocals, and Nick White on keyboards. And, of course, everyone’s phones were stowed away in Yondr pouches. You can complain about the inconvenience, but it was refreshing to be fully immersed in the proceedings instead of having my attention pulled away by my own phone and the screens of others lighting up around me.
The no phone rule has been in place so that Phoebe could play new music without worrying about it circulating around the internet ahead of the release of her new album, which she hasn’t announced yet but we’re all pretty sure must be coming soon. She started this tour by playing three or four new songs a night, and by Thursday we got a total of eight new ones, one of which she said she was playing for the first time. I agreed not to quote any lyrics here as a condition of attending and I didn’t bring a notebook or pen to remove the temptation to write any down, but I can tell you that the new songs were totally captivating and have me anticipating that new album more than ever. There was a song she described as a country song, another with a middle portion that built to a huge crescendo, songs that she played mellotron on and others that were harmonica-laden folk.
She also played a few older songs to start and finish the show. One attendee of the first pop-up show in Roswell said she’d talked onstage about experimenting with different vocal techniques, and I was reminded of that when she started the show with “Motion Sickness,” with her voice sounding stronger and richer than I’ve ever heard it live. “Kyoto” got a folky, stripped down rendition, “Graceland Too” had people holding up real lighters in lieu of phone lights, delighting Phoebe, and “Scott Street” turned into a full venue singalong. As she’d been doing on her Punisher shows, she ended the night with a cathartic take on “I Know The End,” with the whole room screaming to end it.
In lieu of purchasing tickets to the Tidal-hosted show, attendees made a donation of $1-$20 to the Community Justice Exchange’s Immigration Bond Freedom Fund , and Phoebe thanked everyone for their donations, saying “I hate those ICE idiots” and musing on the critical thinking skills necessary to deflect from a conservative family, which she said she was grateful she never had to do .
There was no album announcement, as I’d imagined there could be, but Phoebe did reveal towards the end of the night that she’s going on tour this fall. Owing to her massive popularity these days (it seemed like, no exaggeration, everyone I know either went to or was trying to go MSG), it’ll likely be in larger venues that some fans would like, but if there’s anyone who can make an arena feel intimate, it’s Phoebe.
