The sequel is scheduled to be released on October 1, 2027 and it will see  Robert Pattinson returning to the title role that he established in 2022. Matt Reeves is also returning to direct once again.

Jeffrey Wright will also be back as James Gordon,  Colin Farrell will bring his Penguin persona to the film and Andy Serkis will reprise his role as Alfred Pennyworth.

Speculation has been swirling for months about who might be joining Pattinson in the cast, and now Reeves has confirmed the other leading cast members on social media.

“Next exit, Gotham…Welcome,” in a caption to an X post featuring an gif of Johansson. “In a Gotham state of mind… Welcome,” he added in another post, alongside a gif of Stan.

Earlier this month,  Reeves shared what appeared to be the first glimpse of the film , posting an image on X of the Batmobile amid a flurry of snow, with caption “#SnowTires”, suggesting the movie will be set during a torrid winter.

James Gunn, who took over as the head of the revamped DC Universe after the first film was released,  has defended the five-year wait between the two films , urging fans not to be “entitled”. He has also confirmed that  Batman’s sidekick, Robin, will not be in the new film, despite rumours .

The Batman  and its sequel exist on a separate timeline from the new  DC Universe  that launched last summer with Gunn’s  Superman , starring David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan.

In a four-star review of the first film ,  NME  wrote: “Other things that need to be mentioned include the score – Michael Giacchino’s doomy,  Nirvana -sampling soundtrack is Batman’s best yet – and the post-credits scene. We can’t tell you what happens in it (press embargoes are more closely monitored than the Bat-signal), but it sets up an exciting new Batverse. If his first foray is anything to go by, Pattinson should play a big part.”
