Spotify’s New Feature Offers Premium Subscribers Concert Tickets to Favorite Artists

Spotify is implementing a new system that aims to get concert tickets into the hands of diehard music fans. The company announced Reserved, an experience for eligible Spotify Premium subscribers aged 18 and over that offers two tickets for an artist’s most dedicated fans, allowing them to bypass presale codes and queues on ticketing sites.

The streamer will identify what it refers to as “real fans” based on the number of streams, shares and other Spotify activity. It will also monitor the activity of premium users to ensure they are real human fans and not bots.

Spotify will send an email and an in-app notification informing superfans that they have been selected and can purchase two tickets during a dedicated window, which typically lasts a day. Not every fan will receive an offer because the number of seats available on a tour is far less than the number of fans.

Reserved is an effort by the music streamer to ensure that tickets go to true fans rather than scalpers. The new feature begins this summer in the U.S. and other markets will follow. Availability will vary by artist, tour and location. Eligibility is based on engagement with the artist on Spotify and location, so fans are required to enable a preferred location in their Live Events Feed and to turn on notifications.

Reserved offers are based on location, so if an artist’s tour isn’t coming to your area, you may not receive an offer. Ticket types, seating options and availability will vary by show.

“We’re building this to give something back to the fans who support artists the most—and because when artists and fans win, Spotify does, too. When the listeners who show up for an artist on Spotify are the ones getting into their shows, fans stick around, artists grow, and live music gets stronger,” the company wrote in a release announcing the feature.

Spotify already has features that inform users of concerts near them and allow them to search for their favorite venues. It works with more than 40 ticketing partners and markets artists’ tours. The company stated that its efforts have driven more than $1.5 billion in ticket sales for artists and that Reserved will build on the foundation it set.
