Squirrel Flower Reveals New Album and Fall Tour, Drops New Single “Reelin'”

Squirrel Flower , aka Chicago’s Ella Williams, has announced new album Say a Prayer to the Gods of Getting Going which will be out August 21 via Polyvinyl. She co-produced it with Seth Engel and Jack Henry as well as Alex Farrar who’s worked with MJ Lenderman, Wednesday and Waxahatchee. The album also features contributions from past collaborators Dave Hartley (The War on Drugs) and Seth Kauffman (Angel Olsen), plus Dimitri Giannopoulos (Horse Jumper of Love), Sofia Jensen (Free Range), Clay Frankel (Twin Peaks), Andy Krull (Red PK), and Book not Brooke (Babywave).

“[Alex Farrar] was encouraging me to lean into this ethereal, yet grounded, spacious yet textured folk music that’s so true to the early days of Squirrel Flower,” Williams says of the album. “It felt like a breakthrough.”

You can hear that ethereal side in the first single, “Reelin’.” Williams says, “The lyrics started as an art piece I made on an overdue Kansas Turnpike toll bill. This song is my ode to the push and pull of domesticity and unraveling. Leaving and getting reeled back in, over and over and over and over.” Watch the video below.

Squirrel Flower is on tour this summer, including a current run opening for The Beths, and they’ll both join Spoon for a few shows too. There are also fall dates with Dari Bay , including Brooklyn’s Elsewhere on September 29 , plus runs with youbet and Sour Windows . All dates are listed below.
