As the final opera of The Ring opens, Siegfried holds both the magic Ring and the heart of the Valkyrie Brünnhilde. As the struggle for power reaches its breaking point, love, betrayal, and fate collide in a story that builds toward a cataclysmic ending—one that reshapes the world itself with fire and ice.
Directed by Carl W. Knobloch, Jr. General & Artistic Director Tomer Zvulun, and conducted by Roberto Kalb, the production serves as the culmination of a cycle that has reimagined Wagner's epic for modern audiences. In collaboration with scenic and projections designer Erhard Rom, lighting designer Robert Wierzel , and Costume Designer Mattie Ullrich , Zvulun and his creative team bring a visually striking final chapter to life, blending mythic storytelling with cinematic scale.
“This is the moment we have been building toward for four seasons, and in truth, the dream began for me and my team on my very first day at The Atlanta Opera 13 years ago,” says Zvulun. “Bringing The Ring cycle to Atlanta has required extraordinary determination, imagination, and collective will. With Twilight of the Gods, we complete the first new Ring cycle in the history of the South and the first new Ring cycle in America to reach completion since the pandemic began. At a time when producing opera at the highest level has become more difficult than ever, this milestone affirms Atlanta's emergence as a national leader in creating and sustaining world-class art.”
Lise Lindstrom reprises her celebrated portrayal of Brünnhilde. Stefan Vinke returns as the hero Siegfried, a role that has brought him acclaim on the world's leading stages, including the Bayreuth Festival, the Metropolitan Opera, and the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. Making his Atlanta Opera debut as the villainous Hagen, David Leigh returns to a role he recently performed at Opernhaus Zürich. Roberto Kalb, Music Director of Detroit Opera, widely praised for his clarity, intensity, and musical insight, returns to the podium.
The production also features Tamara Mumford , a veteran of over 200 performances at The Metropolitan Opera, as Waltraute and First Norn; rising star and Metropolitan Opera Lindemann artist Le Bu takes on the role of the corrupt Gunther; and Sylvia D'Eramo, praised for her “brilliance of highs and powerful lyricism” (Olyrix), makes her role debut as Gutrune, his sister. Rounding out the cast, Olivia Vote returns to The Atlanta Opera as Second Norn; Caitlyn Lynch and Aleksey Bogdanov make their house debuts as Third Norn and Alberich; while Cadie J. Bryan, Alexandra Razskazoff, and Gretchen Krupp reprise their roles as the Rhinemaidens – Woglinde, Wellgunde, and Flosshilde, respectively – from Atlanta's 2023's Das Rheingold. The Atlanta Opera Studio Artist Wade Odle appears as Second Vassal.
