Arena Stage has released rehearsal footage of THE MOTION, Christopher Chen 's fiercely intelligent new play now playing through June 14, 2026 at the Fichandler Stage.

Directed by Hana S. Sharif , the play follows four scholars whose razor-sharp debate spirals into a world-altering unraveling as they are thrust into a kaleidoscopic odyssey through memory, identity, and the fragile boundaries of belief. As the world around them transforms, they find unexpected solace, love, and companionship while wrestling with profound questions about purpose, morality, and what it truly means to be alive.

The cast features Nancy Robinette as the Moderator, Barzin Akhavan as Dr. Alan James , Nikkole Salter as Dr. Sarah Matthis, Peregrine Teng Heard as Prof. Lily Chan, and Nehal Joshi as Prof. Neel Bharara.

The creative team includes Tim Mackabee (set design), Mika Eubanks (costumes), Jason Lynch and Xavier Pierce (co-lighting design), and Charles Coes and Nathan A. Roberts (sound design and original music), with LaShawn Melton serving as wig and hair designer.

Special events include an In Conversation with playwright Christopher Chen on May 8, post-show conversations on May 28, June 3, and June 9, and community nights including College Night on May 9, Pride Night on May 13, HBCU Night on May 26, and Young Professionals Night on May 30. An audio-described performance takes place May 30 at 2 p.m.
