Village Underground Unveils New Rooftop Bar With Iconic Tube Carriage Access

London’s iconic Village Underground venue is opening a new rooftop space this summer. Find all the details below.

The independent cultural space, located on Great Eastern Street, Shoreditch, is celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2026. Charli XCX , Pixies , The Kills and IDLES are among those to have played shows there previously.

Now, bosses have shared plans for the Village Underground Rooftop, which opens to the public on Friday July 3. It is set to operate from Wednesday to Sunday thereafter. Sign up here for booking information .

Punters will be able to access both the rooftop and its iconic tube carriages for the first time, with the outdoor area boasting a bar and views of east London. Village Underground’s open-air terrace was designed by MOBO Works.

National Pizza Of The Year UK award winner Bad Boy Pizza Society has been confirmed as the food partner, bringing its 12” New York-inspired pizzas to the terrace.

The Village Underground Rooftop is also available for private hire, brand activations, launches and collaborations, and can host up to 300 people. Those interested can contact  grace@villageunderground.co.uk for further details.

Auro Foxcroft, founder and CEO of Village Underground, said: “For nearly 20 years, we’ve had this suntrap spot on the Shoreditch skyline to ourselves, so it’s exciting to finally be able to share it with our audiences and the local community.

“The train carriages have been part of how we’ve used the space day to day – from working to interviewing artists – and this feels like the natural next step, opening them up and making them part of the space for everyone to enjoy.”

The rooftop forms part of Village Underground’s ongoing evolution as it reaches its two-decade milestone. It’ll help support the long-term future of both the venue and its sister establishment, Hackney’s EartH, as independent spaces for music and culture in east London.

Founded in 2006, Village Underground is housed in a renovated Victorian warehouse with cavernous railway arches. It began as a creative initiative, installing decommissioned tube carriages and shipping containers on the roof of a former railway viaduct to provide space for artists and creatives.

The venue is known for its cultural programming, hosting an eclectic mix of live music, club nights and multidisciplinary events, and supporting both emerging and internationally recognised artists.
