Julia Holter unveils ‘Materia’ alongside new track “Fantasy”

Julia Holter has announced a companion to her most recent album, 2024’s Something in the Room She Moves . Materia is due out on August 21 via Domino, and you can see the cover art and tracklist below.

Materia includes reinventions of its title track as well as new songs, and she’s shared one of the latter, “Fantasy.” “This song of seeming willful abandon was somehow the most laborious undertaking of the entire record—it took over a year and went through various transformations—and I love that contradiction,” she says. “It’s dancey, it feels to me like a kind of conjuring. And amidst the momentum of reverie, there’s the line ‘blink at the light and hope to survive,’ because daydreams in a fascist state can be scary too.
