Mike D of Beastie Boys Announces Rare Live Performances in NYC and Los Angeles

Mike D of Beastie Boys has announced a handful of new shows, set for this month in New York and California. The hip-hop pioneer shared the news of his upcoming performances on Instagram on May 6th, writing, “Los Angeles and Brooklyn. It’s happening. Shows. New music. Switch Up. Let’s Go.”

The California shows are planned for May 7th at Plaza Night Club and Dance Hall, and May 10th at Sid the Cat Auditorium. The Brooklyn shows will happen on May 22nd and 23rd at Xanadu Roller Arts in Brooklyn. Tickets are on sale now .

The shows arrive after Mike D joined his sons Skyler and Davis Diamond — the alternative band Very Nice Person — for a viral surprise performance on April 11th, at the Ojai Valley Women’s Club in California. In the days leading up to the show, Mike D’s sons advertised they would be joined by a “very special guest.”

Mike D took the stage to deliver lively renditions of Beastie Boys songs such as “Looking Down the Barrel of a Gun” from 1989’s Paul’s Boutique and “So What’cha Want” from 1992’s Check Your Head . The 60-year-old rapper’s Ojai appearance came just a few days after he joined his sons for a gig in Malibu.

Mike D, whose real name is Michael Diamond, hasn’t toured as a Beastie Boy since his bandmate Adam “MCA” Yauch died in 2012 . The trailblazing group — rounded out by Adam “Ad-Rock” Horovitz — effectively retired the project after that. While live performances of the original catalog have been rare, the trio’s spirit has been kept alive through archival reissues , the Spike Jonze Beastie Boys Story stage production, and the 2020 documentary of the same name on Apple TV+.
