New Music Friday: 19 Fresh Tracks From Iceage, Social Distortion, Kurt Vile, and More

So many artists, so many songs, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out . We post music news, track premieres, and more all day. We update a playlist weekly of some of our current favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place.

KURT VILE – “ZOOM 97”

“This was the first song that came together on this record that we knew was real special, like we knew we were on the right track ya know,” Kurt Vile says of this new single from his upcoming album Philadelphia’s been good to me . “And it’s a 100% Philly born and bred affair. I could reminisce out loud but for now we takin it inward… ‘jump in my whip… my engine whines, yeah… zig zag my way… down Lincoln Drive, yeah…'”

BEDOUINE – “ON MY OWN”

We’re a month out from the release of Beouine’s new album Neon Summer Skin , and she’s shared a third single, “On My Own,” which was produced by Jonathan Rado with contributions from Michael and Brain D’Addario of The Lemon Twigs. “I wrote ‘On My Own’ after I returned from visiting my parents in Saudi Arabia,” she says. “I felt such a deep sense of loss because it was likely one of my last trips there, at least while my parents were still living in the village-like place of my childhood. I was flooded with nostalgia for it all; the chatter in the house, the constant fighting between my brothers, but more than anything the feeling of belonging to something. I felt very lonely and pondered the space between the family you come from and the one you might one day create.”

ALDOUS HARDING – “COATS”

Aldous Harding’s new album Train on the Island is out on Friday, and you get one more preview before the whole thing hits.

PUSSY RIOT – “DISOBEY”

Pussy Riot’s new single “Disobey” arrives as Russia returns to the Venice Biennale. “I wanted to do a classic punk song – in old school Pussy Riot style – I’ve been trying to be polite – writing letters via the Council of Europe, writing directly to the board, to the president, to people in the art world, and dead ends everywhere,” Nadya Tolokonnikova says. “Polite society doesn’t work when you are dealing with thugs and crooks – so we meet them with punk, we have to scream our anger and disdain for what is happening. Over 50 members of Pussy Riot, from all over the world came here to the Storm of Venice, to scream and take part in this moment. We quickly go into editing mode after – gathering photographers and video people, we cut the video sitting in a cafe – and turn it around in a day – this is our actionist training in action. This is our art, and our protest. We hope the punks, freaks, and actually anyone who ever felt like fucking screaming to enjoy this song and moment with us. Fuck Putin.”

ICEAGE – “THE WEAK”

Iceage’s new album For Love of Grace & the Hereafter is out at the end of May and here’s another early taste with the countrified “The Weak.”

FLO – “THERAPY AT THE CLUB”

R&B trio FLO announced their sophomore album, Therapy at the Club , due out July 24 via Republic, and shared the title track, which they first performed at their NPR Tiny Desk set in February.

ALEXIS TAYLOR (HOT CHIP) AND MIKE SIMONETTI – “PERFECT KISS”

Hot Chip’s Alexis Taylor and Italians Do It Better / Troubleman Unlimited founder Mike Simonetti have announced a collaborative 12″ which will be out June 12 via Smugglers Way. It’s not what you might think though — “Perfect Kiss” is not a New Order cover, or even a dance song, but a tender acoustic ballad. “It’s about being alienated and an outsider in society while wanting to be accepted for the true person that you are,” Taylor says. “There’s the real you, but maybe that’s not how you appear to others–so you’re asking to be brought out of yourself and into the world, accepted for this other version of yourself.”

SLOW FICTION – “JUNIOR YEAR”

NYC-based band Slow Fiction have shared their first single for Tight Knit, “Junior Year.” Vocalist Julia Vassallo says it “looks at the perspectives of two types of people: the one who wants to commodify or sell, and the other who wants to rebel against that notion while feeling intensely stuck in this machine of objectification. We’ve all been made to feel small at one time or another, which just isn’t a very nice feeling. I’ve often had that ‘conversation hangover,’ where I spend loads of time afterwards, fantasizing over the perfect thing I could’ve said. I guess this was the easiest way to form a reply.”

SLIPPERS – “WASTED TONIGHT”

Slippers (Madeline Babuka Black) will release new album Slippers 08 next month and here’s another jangly gem from it.

TASHA – “CLARION” & “SPRING” (FT. L’RAIN & JAMILA WOODS)

Tasha announced a new album, You Are Spring! , due out June 26 via Bayonet, and shared the two singles. About “Clarion,” she says, “While making the long drive between New York and Chicago (which I did 3 times in the span of 2 months in 2024) I repeatedly took note of a sign for the Pennsylvania town of Clarion and each time thought to myself, ‘That would make a great name for a song.’ So I decided to make a song with that name. A song about coming and going, about wanting to change your life but not quite knowing how you’re going to do it, but feeling suddenly on the edge of figuring it out. The goodness is coming, it’s around the corner, you can feel it!” Her other new track, “Spring,” features vocals from L’Rain and Jamila Woods.

WHITNEY – “SEE YOU LATER, I’M GONE” (ROBERT LESTER FOLSOM COVER) & “EVANGELINE (4 TRACK DEMO)”

Ahead of their next round of tour dates, Whitney have shared a cover of Robert Lester Folsom’s “See You Later, I’m Gone,” and a 4 track demo of “Evangeline” from their most recent album, Small Talk . “Originally we were only covering ‘See You Later, I’m Gone’ as an exercise to dust off the cobwebs in our studio after being away touring for a while,” they say. “That recording ended up feeling special enough that we sent it along to our manager who had the idea to ask Robert if he’d ever play some concerts with us – that way we could release the cover as a little treat while announcing the shows. Unfortunately, Robert is busy but here’s the cover and a demo of ‘Evangeline’ anyways!”

JOSH DA COSTA – “PROVING ME RIGHT”

Josh Da Costa, who plays in Drugdealer and used to lead trio Regal Degal, has announced solo album New Wave Graveyard which will be out July 24 via Stones Throw. Single “Proving Me Right” is his “tribute to bands like Japan, Sparks, ELO, Associates, and Cleaners From Venus.”

DEER TICK – “ACI”

Deer Tick’s new album Coin-O-Matic arrives next month, and they’ve given us another preview with “ACI.” “The ACI (Adult Correctional Institutions) is the state prison system here in Rhode Island,” John McCauley says. “As much as it is infamous for its conditions and some of its current and former residents, it’s also somewhat of a punchline. Recently there was a problem with some of the locks malfunctioning… seriously. I came up with the chorus while we were jamming at a soundcheck. It stuck with me and I decided to flesh it out and write an entire story about a neighborhood hoodlum and his best friend who commit a robbery that goes all wrong. It was my first true effort at writing a song for Coin-O-Matic , which at the time had only existed as an idea. I even talked to a few people in the legal system to make sure I got my facts straight and creatively played very little with the truth. A heartland rocker with a worm at its core.”

SOCIAL DISTORTION – “THE WAY THINGS WERE”

Ahead of the release of their first album in 15 years, Born to Kill , this Friday, Social Distortion have given us a final preview with “The Way Things Were.”

GENGHIS TRON – “BORN PREY”

“We’re proud to share our first true ripper since ‘Board Up The House’ (2008),” Genghis Tron say of “Born Prey,” the chaotic latest single off their new album Signal Fire . “We still love making bonkers-ass abrasive music, and after ‘Dream Weapon’ (2021)—which was very focused on creating a hypnotic and ethereal experience—we couldn’t pass up a second opportunity to let Nick Yacyshyn let loose on the drums and shred some blasts. But that’s just the first 60 seconds! Then the song takes a left turn and goes somewhere completely different, and by the time you get to the end, you’ll have no idea how you got there. It’s a good window into Signal Fire , which to our ears is the most varied and exploratory album we’ve ever made.”

LAMBCHOP – “WEAKENED” FT JUSTIN VERNON

Lambchop’s Punching the Clown features Justin Vernon on piano and a six-part choir across the whole album. It’s out August 21 and this is the first single.

JAWDROPPED – “MONDAY”

Los Angeles band Jawdropped signed to Transgressive/Canvasback and released their first track for the label, which you can read more about here .
