Shane MacGowan’s Pub to Open in NYC, Endorsed by His Family

A new drinking establishment called Shane MacGowan’s Pub is coming to New York City’s West Village with the blessing of the late Pogues frontman’s family.

It will be located at 250 West 14th Street between 7th and 8th Avenue, which used to house McKenna’s Pub. “This will be a living tribute to a true icon,” a statement reads. “We are incredibly honored to be opening this space with the blessing of Shane’s family, bringing his raw, poetic Irish punk spirit to the West Village.”

An opening date has not been revealed, but social media profiles tease that the pub is “coming soon.”

MacGowan was famously a heavy drinker during his lifetime after reportedly being introduced to alcohol at the tender age of five. Though the overindulgence partially led to MacGowan initially being fired from The Pogues in 1991, it was also central to his songwriting on classics like “Fairytale of New York.”

Following his death in 2023 from complications of viral encephalitis and pneumonia, it was revealed that MacGowan left behind more than $12,000 to cover the post-funeral bar tab at his favorite local pub, the Thatched Cottage in Nenagh.
