This Is Lorelei Previews Matador Debut ‘The Singer In My Band’ with “Billy Came Back”

Nate Amos (of Water From Your Eyes and My Idea) brought his long-running solo project This Is Lorelei to the forefront with his surprise-hit 2024 album Box for Buddy, Box for Star , and since then he re-recorded a bunch of his older lo-fi songs for 2025’s Holo Boy , got a star-studded cast of indie musicians to cover the entirety of Box for Buddy for this year’s super deluxe edition , signed to Matador , and announced the largest tour of his career for this fall. Now, he finally announces his new album.

Titled The Singer In My Band , This Is Lorelei’s Matador debut comes out on September 11 and we’ve got an exclusive lime green vinyl variant up for pre-order now in the BV shop , limited to 500. I think it’s safe to say that there’s a lot of anticipation for this one (there certainly is from us here at BV), so it’s very exciting that the album’s first single “Billy Came Back” is up there with the most instantly-satisfying songs in Nate’s catalog. It finds the genre-agnostic artist in jangly folk-pop mode, with gorgeous harmony vocals that take the tuneful chorus to another level.

“‘Billy Came Back’ stewed for months before I picked up a guitar to work it out – I kept forgetting about it but it always came back,” Nate says. “Finishing the song was the only way to get it to leave me alone.” It comes with a video directed by Alan “Rickman” Official that looks like a vintage Western buddy film, and you can check that out right here:

Having previously operated in the classic “bedroom artist” sense, Nate wrote The Singer In My Band while touring the world in both This Is Lorelei and Water From Your Eyes and he considers it his first “road record.” “The ideas incubated while daydreaming in the car without access to any instruments,” he says, “so instead of being home and writing on the guitar or a computer, they developed slowly and subconsciously, existing as a sort of intangible thing while looking out the van window.”

“It’s funny, I sent my dad the album after I finished it, and he said it was kind of an ‘on the road beatnik’ album and that reframed it for me,” Nate continues. “It really is like a collection of chaotic experiences that you have while travelling. They’re also very much little works of fiction with elements of truth to them.”

Nate’s father is bluegrass musician Bob Amos, who teamed up with Nate’s sister Sarah Amos for the cover of “Angel’s Eye” on the Box for Buddy, Box for Star deluxe edition, and Bob rips some banjo on the title track of this new album. Sarah sings on it too, as does Nate’s partner Al Nardo (of Fantasy of a Broken Heart and This Is Lorelei’s live band). Otherwise, Nate engineered, produced, and performed everything on the album himself.

Nate also gave a quote in the press release for this new album about his “lifelong reverence” for bluegrass: “It’s the most fundamental form of music to me. There’s a simplicity to bluegrass, where there are very particular rules and a very particular box – songs have to stand up by themselves in terms of melody, lyrics and chord progression.”

Nate’s tour begins after a few festival appearances (Newport Folk Fest, Just Like Heaven, Riot Fest), and it includes his two biggest NYC shows yet in November: 11/6 at Webster Hall with @ and 11/12 at Warsaw . All dates are listed below.
