The song, which is the opening track of SPLAT! , showcases a rapid-fire riff from Simon McBride mirroring the feel of classic Deep Purple tracks like “Space Truckin'” and “Highway Star.” It also has a proggy instrumental centerpiece including a unison riff between the keys and guitar, some proto-prog late ’60s psychedelia, and a more atmospheric stretch that wouldn’t have been out of place on a Yes album.
Singer Ian Gillan stated, “‘Arrogant Boy’ is the story of Billy who couldn’t read or write. He is unhappy with things, so he speaks up, and finds a way of irritating, one way or another, the elite. And I can’t think of anything more fun than irritating the elite. It would be a joyous exercise for me every morning after coffee.”
