Father John Misty Unveils Psychedelic New Track "The Payoff"

Father John Misty is back with a new song, “The Payoff,” his second single of 2026. Stream it below.

“The Payoff” was written and composed by Josh Tillman himself, who co-produced it with Drew Erickson. With a psychedelic edge reminiscent of ELO and a heavy guitar riff, the track is certainly a ripper with his usual inscrutable lyrics.

“Waiting for the payoff/ Coming due,” Tillman sings. “I feel a little stupid/ Doubting you/ ‘Cause nobody gets ripped off/ When there’s nothing to lose.”

The new tune follows January’s “The Old Law,” which was previously known to fans as “God’s Trash.” His most recent album, Mahashmashana , was released in 2024. See where it landed on our list of the best albums of 2024 .

Father John Misty has also announced a new UK date at London’s O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire on Friday, June 12th to make up for his canceled Lido Festival appearance. Tickets will first be available through an artist pre-sale (sign up here ) on Wednesday, May 13th at 10:00 a.m. BST, with the general on-sale following on Friday, May 15th at 10:00 a.m. BST via Ticketmaster .

The show is part of a packed summer schedule, which resumes on May 14th with a handful of US dates before a European leg of festivals and headlining dates (get tickets here ). After that, he’ll play a string of North American dates throughout June and July, followed by September appearances at Bourbon and Beyond and All Things Go .
