About the series

The Ryder Cup is a team match-play contest between Europe and the United States, held every two years and alternating between European and American host courses. There is no prize money, which is part of why the atmosphere is unlike any stroke-play event.

The competition format — foursomes, four-balls and closing singles — means the shape of the week is fixed even though the venue changes, and each day has its own character.

Because it happens only every other year and moves continents each time, this is the golf week that most rewards early planning around the announced host venue.
