How a golf tournament works

Most professional tournaments are played over four rounds across four days, with practice days beforehand. After two rounds the field is normally cut, so the weekend rounds have fewer players and a tighter schedule. Team competitions such as the Ryder Cup use match play instead and follow their own format.

Golf is the least seat-shaped sport in ticketing. Spectators walk the course and choose where to stand, so a day ticket is closer to a festival admission than to an arena seat.

What to check before buying golf tickets

Tickets are normally sold per day. Grounds or general-admission style access lets you follow groups around the course and use whatever public viewing areas the event provides. Some tournaments also sell grandstand, hospitality or clubhouse products, but which of those exist is decided by each individual event — never assume a package is available until the specific event lists it.

Attending is a walking day outdoors, often several miles over uneven ground, with limited shade and weather that can change the schedule. Footwear, sun cover and a plan for where to watch from matter more here than in any indoor sport.
