About the series

The Australian Open opens the Grand Slam calendar each January at Melbourne Park. Rod Laver Arena is the centrepiece, with Margaret Court Arena and John Cain Arena also hosting major matches, all three under roofs that keep play going through heat and rain.

Sessions are split between day and night, and the summer timing means late-night finishes are a normal part of the tournament rather than an exception. Ground passes give access to the outer courts and to the festival-style site around them.

For anyone travelling from the northern hemisphere, this is the major that needs the most lead time, and the one where the session type on your ticket makes the biggest practical difference.

What to check before you buy

  • Day and night sessions are sold separately.
  • Main arenas have roofs; outer courts do not.
  • Late finishes are common — plan transport accordingly.
