Major tennis events
Permanent reference pages for the recurring championships in this sport. Each one explains how that event is run and what its tickets normally cover.
How professional tennis is organised
Professional tennis runs as a year-round circuit of tournaments rather than a league season. Men's and women's tour events, combined events that stage both at the same site, and the four Grand Slam championships all sit on the same calendar, and players choose which tournaments to enter.
Every event is a knockout draw. Rounds run from the opening round through to the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final, so the number of matches shrinks as the tournament progresses. Singles is the headline competition; doubles and mixed doubles run alongside it, usually on the same site and often included in the same ticket.
- Grand Slams run roughly two weeks; most tour events run about one week.
- Larger tournaments play across many courts at once in the early rounds.
- Match-ups are set by the draw and the daily schedule, not by the ticket.
What a tennis ticket actually covers
Tennis tickets are usually sold by session and by court. A stadium session covers whatever is scheduled on that court during that session; a grounds pass covers access to the outer courts, and at bigger tournaments those are separate products at very different levels. Some tournaments split each day into a day session and a night session, and some sell a single all-day ticket instead — the format varies by tournament.
Because the draw and the order of play are published shortly before matches, no ticket can promise a particular player or pairing. If seeing a specific match matters more than seeing a lot of tennis, later rounds on the main court are the closest you can get, and that is a decision about the round, not about the name.
- Confirm the court and the session, not just the date.
- Grounds access and main-stadium seats are different tickets.
- Main show courts may be covered; outer courts are usually open to the weather.
- Seating layouts, permitted items and entry policies are set by each venue and each event, so check the official venue and event information before you travel.
Tennis ticket questions
- Does a tennis ticket guarantee a specific player?
- No. Tournaments publish the order of play shortly before matches, and a ticket covers the court and session rather than any named player or match-up.
- What is the difference between a grounds pass and a stadium ticket?
- A grounds pass gives access to the outer courts and the tournament site. A stadium ticket is a seat in a specific main arena for a specific session. At the Grand Slams they are sold separately.
- What happens if rain interrupts play?
- That depends on the tournament's own published policy and on whether the court has a roof. Refund and rescheduling terms come from the tournament and from the terms attached to your order.
