Big East

The BIG EAST Conference is a college athletics conference whose 11 member schools compete in NCAA Division I. The conference office is in New York City, and its membership is concentrated in the northeastern and midwestern United States.

Its full members are Butler, Connecticut, Creighton, DePaul, Georgetown, Marquette, Providence, St. John's, Seton Hall, Villanova and Xavier. Regular-season conference games are hosted in each school's own arena.

The conference's signature event is the BIG EAST Men's Basketball Tournament at Madison Square Garden in New York City. It is a single-site tournament, which means several games are played in the same building over consecutive days and the teams involved depend on regular-season finishes.

A competition has a texture of its own: the calendar, the size of the venues, the travelling support and the stakes attached to a single fixture all differ between leagues and conferences, and they shape the evening more than any individual result does.

Fixture context is worth reading before you go. A mid-table meeting and a rivalry or conference-deciding match can take place in the same building and feel like different sports, largely because of who travels and how much is riding on the outcome.

Venue variety is part of the appeal. Competitions that span many cities move you between very different buildings — capacity, sightlines, transit and pre-match routines all change — so treat each venue as its own trip rather than assuming a league-wide template.

Choose the fixture first, then the seat. In a multi-team competition the same seat category can cost very differently depending on the opponent and the point in the calendar, so decide which match you actually want to see before comparing prices.

Read the host venue's layout for every match. Member clubs and programmes play in buildings with different level names, entrances and supporter areas; a section name that means one thing at one venue can mean something else at another.

Put every option on an all-in basis for your exact quantity. That is the only fair comparison, and it prevents fees from quietly reordering your shortlist.

Treat later-round or postseason plans as provisional. Where a competition's later rounds depend on results that have not happened yet, budget for them separately rather than assuming a fixture will exist.
