Realignment notes for 2026–27

A heavy year — 27 programs changed leagues. The rebuilt Pac-12 returned as a nine-team basketball conference, taking Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, San Diego State, and Utah State from the Mountain West, Texas State from the Sun Belt, and Gonzaga from the WCC, joining holdovers Oregon State and Washington State. The WAC rebranded as the United Athletic Conference under an alliance with the ASUN, keeping the WAC's automatic-bid status, and the American dropped "Athletic" from its name. The MAAC announced it will rename itself the Metro Conference effective July 1, so you may see it referenced either way. West Florida is transitioning up from D-II and isn't NCAA Tournament eligible until 2030.

Two 2027–28 moves are already announced: UC Santa Barbara and UC San Diego leave the Big West for the WCC.

Postseason

Conference tournaments

All 32 conferences hold a postseason tournament in March, with the winner receiving an automatic NCAA Tournament bid. Notable venues: the Big Ten tournament at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, the Big East at Madison Square Garden, the ACC rotating among Southeast sites, the Big 12 in Kansas City, and the SEC in Nashville. Most mid-major tournaments run at a fixed neutral-site host.

NCAA Tournament — expanding to 76 teams

The NCAA announced in May 2026 that both the men's and women's Division I tournaments expand from 68 to 76 teams beginning this season: 32 automatic bids (one per conference champion) plus 44 at-large bids, up from 36, with a new "Opening Round" ahead of the main bracket. The 2027 tournament begins March 16, 2027, and the championship game — the 88th edition — is April 5, 2027, at Ford Field in Detroit.

Secondary postseason tournaments

The NIT remains the primary secondary event, alongside the CBI (College Basketball Invitational) and the College Basketball Crown. These events change sponsors, formats, and sometimes fold from year to year far more often than the NCAA Tournament, so verify the current lineup before you rely on it.

Other division championships

Division II — 64-team tournament ending at the Elite Eight championship. Division III — 64-team tournament ending at the Division III championship.

College Basketball Tickets & Game-Day Guide

College basketball brings together men’s and women’s teams across hundreds of schools, with conference games, rivalries, campus arenas, conference tournaments and national postseason events creating many ways to follow the sport.

Use the conference and team directory above, browse arenas and cities, or continue through Discover. Once approved provider inventory is connected, verified games, dates, venues, availability and all-in prices can appear on the appropriate pages. Until then, this guide does not present schedules, inventory or prices.

How College Basketball Is Organized

NCAA basketball spans Divisions I, II and III. Schools compete largely through conferences, but college basketball is not organized like a professional franchise league. Conference membership shapes much of a team’s regular season, while nonconference games allow schools to meet opponents outside that structure.

Division I receives the broadest national coverage and includes hundreds of institutions, but significant programs, traditions and championships exist in Divisions II and III as well. The conference and team listings on this page support discovery without suggesting that Division I represents the whole sport.

Men’s and Women’s College Basketball

OriginalTickets can support discovery across both men’s and women’s college basketball. Each has regular-season competition, conference races, conference tournaments and NCAA championship events, but their schedules, tournament structures and eventual ticket inventory must be treated independently.

This page uses inclusive college-basketball language where a point applies to both sports. Verified event records will identify the specific competition when live inventory becomes available; no men’s format should be assumed to apply to women’s basketball unless official information confirms it.

Division I Membership in 2026

Reviewed September 2026

The NCAA’s latest active-membership breakdown reports 361 active Division I institutions. The NCAA also describes Division I as having more than 360 schools. Counts can differ when reclassifying institutions are included, so this figure is date-stamped and should be reviewed as membership changes.

The complete team-by-conference directory higher on this page is the practical discovery tool. It should be maintained from current canonical school and conference data rather than repeated in this editorial section.

Current Division I Conferences

2026–27 conference discovery

Division I contains 32 primary conferences in the current 2026–27 landscape. Membership and conference names can change through realignment. These links use only conference pages already established in OriginalTickets; the comprehensive school listings remain above.

Finding College Basketball Teams

Fans can begin with a school or team, then broaden the search through its conference, home arena, city or established rivalry. The full conference directory above is designed for comprehensive browsing without creating a subjective ranking of programs.

Examples with existing canonical pages include Duke, North Carolina, Kentucky, Louisville, Indiana, Purdue, Kansas, Kansas State, UCLA and USC.

College Basketball Arenas & the Live Experience

College basketball can feel different from professional basketball because the arena may sit within a campus community shaped by student sections, pep bands, school traditions and rivalry crowds. Conference tournaments and NCAA postseason games can move that atmosphere to neutral sites shared by several fan bases.

Arenas vary in seating-bowl shape, capacity, elevation, sightlines, student-section placement, premium areas, parking, transit and campus access. Compare the actual venue and event listing before choosing. Browse the arena directory, city guides, Madison Square Garden, New York City and Indianapolis through their existing pages.

Choosing College Basketball Seats

No seating category guarantees a particular view, atmosphere or access. When verified inventory is available, compare the actual arena map and listing details before selecting.

  • Lower-Level Sideline / Center Court

Closer to the court with a balanced side-on view; exact sightlines depend on row and arena.
  • Baseline / Behind the Basket

A close view of play at one end, with the basket structure affecting some angles.
  • Corners

An angled perspective that can balance court proximity and a broader view.
  • Upper-Level Center Court

More elevation can make full-court movement easier to follow, depending on the arena.
  • Club / Premium Areas

Location and access vary by arena; review the listing rather than assuming amenities.
  • Student Sections / School-Allocated Areas

Often energetic, but access, standing traditions and resale eligibility can be school-specific.

What Affects College Basketball Ticket Prices?

Price can reflect the schools involved, rivalry interest, conference implications, team performance or rankings at that time, arena, seat location, day of week, special-event status, conference-tournament or postseason round, market demand and remaining verified inventory.

There is no universal rule that waiting makes college basketball tickets cheaper or more expensive. Prices and availability can move in either direction. OriginalTickets will show live prices only when they come from approved, verified provider inventory, and every displayed price will be the all-in total including fees.

College Basketball Rivalries

Rivalries can grow from geography, shared conference history, repeated high-stakes meetings and school traditions. They can matter in men’s basketball, women’s basketball or both, but the surrounding history and intensity differ by program.

Illustrative pairings with existing canonical team pages include Duke and North Carolina, Kentucky and Louisville, Indiana and Purdue, Kansas and Kansas State, and UCLA and USC. These examples do not imply a current schedule, ranking or result.

Conference Tournaments

Many conferences hold tournaments near the end of regular-season conference play. These can be major ticketed events and can secure or influence qualification for an NCAA championship, but formats, qualification procedures, sites and session structures differ.

Current participants, brackets, dates and venues should come only from verified event data. Use existing conference pages for broader context, including the ACC, Big 12, Big East, Big Ten and SEC.

March Madness & the NCAA Tournaments

Current format reviewed September 2026

“March Madness” commonly refers to the NCAA Division I basketball championships, but the men’s and women’s tournaments are distinct competitions with their own teams, brackets and events.

Both Division I tournaments used 68-team fields through 2026. The NCAA has announced that both the men’s and women’s championships expand to 76 teams beginning in 2027. Each 2027 tournament will begin with 12 Opening Round games before the traditional 64-team First Round. From there, the familiar progression includes the Second Round, Sweet 16, Elite Eight, Final Four and national championship.

This format is current as of September 2026 and is stored separately so editors can revise or hide it if NCAA championship procedures change. No current seeds, brackets, participants or results are included.

A Short History of College Basketball

Dr. James Naismith created basketball in Springfield, Massachusetts, in December 1891 and wrote the original 13 rules. College programs adopted and developed the sport rapidly in the decades that followed.

The NCAA men’s championship began in 1939. The NCAA Division I women’s championship began in 1982, following an earlier era of women’s national competition outside the NCAA. Conference tournaments and national championships became central parts of college basketball’s postseason culture.

The men’s Division I tournament expanded repeatedly, reached 68 teams in 2011 and remained at 68 through 2026. The NCAA has announced a 76-team field for 2027; the women’s Division I tournament is also scheduled to expand from 68 to 76 in 2027.
