Major horse racing events

Permanent reference pages for the recurring championships in this sport. Each one explains how that event is run and what its tickets normally cover.

How a race day is structured

A day at the races is a card of several races run over a few hours, not a single contest. The feature race is normally late in the card, and the races before it are part of the same admission. Attending is a whole-afternoon or whole-evening event with long gaps between races.

The Triple Crown is a sequence of three separate stakes races at three different tracks, each with its own race day and its own tickets. It is a season-long achievement, not a single ticketed event.

  • One admission normally covers the full card for that day.
  • Feature races usually run late in the programme.
  • Big meetings often run across several days with different admissions.

Reserved seats, general admission and track areas

Tracks sell a mix of general admission and reserved seating, and the mix is specific to the track and to the day. Grandstand, clubhouse, box and infield are common terms, but what each includes — seat, table, shade, indoor access, view of the finish — is defined by the individual track and event rather than by any standard.

Most of a race day happens outdoors. Dress codes exist at some meetings and not at others, and weather affects both the going and the comfort of the day.

  • Confirm whether a listing is a reserved seat or general admission.
  • Grandstand, clubhouse and infield mean different things at different tracks.
  • Check the specific race day, not just the meeting.
  • Seating layouts, permitted items and entry policies are set by each venue and each event, so check the official venue and event information before you travel.

Horse Racing ticket questions

Is the Triple Crown a single event I can buy tickets for?
No. It refers to three separate races at three different tracks, each with its own race day and its own tickets.
Does general admission include a seat?
Not usually. General admission gives entry to the public areas of the track; reserved seats, boxes and clubhouse areas are sold separately where the track offers them.
How many races are on a card?
That varies by track and day. A typical card has several races spread over a few hours, with the feature race towards the end.
