Bay Area rap producer Tone Capone, a man who helped make some absolute classics, has passed away. KQED reports that Capone died on Saturday. No cause of death has been reported. Capone was 59.

Tone Capone was born Anthony Douglas Gilmour in Gilmour, and he mostly grew up in Oakland. He started out as a high-school DJ in the '80s, and he started producing under the name DJG in the early '90s. He worked with his high school friend Mike Marshall, a member of the R&B group Timex Social Club, to craft a beat and hook for the local rap group Luniz. That song became the 1995 crossover smash "I Got 5 On It," a top-10 pop hit that became an enduring classic.

In the years that followed, Tone Capone continued to work with Bay Area rappers like E-40, Celly Cel, Dru Down, 3X Krazy, Mac Dre, and the Jacka. His work with Seagram, an Oakland rapper signed to the Houston label Rap-A-Lot, brought him to Houston rap great Scarface. On Scarface's 1997 album The Untouchable , Tone Capone worked closely with fellow producers Scarface, Mike Dean, and N.O. Joe to make a number of tracks, including the hit 2Pac collab "Smile."

Tone Capone went on to work with Scarface many times over the years, as well as fellow Houston rappers like Devin The Dude and Z-Ro. In the '00s, Capone branched out further, producing for artists like Lloyd Banks, Black Moon, and Benzino. In recent years, Capone reportedly lived in Las Vegas and worked a day job at a hospital before retiring. Check out some of his work below.
