Spotify is giving listeners a way to stop kids and family music from shaping their personalized recommendations.

The company began rolling out the new setting on Tuesday ( September 15 ), giving users the option to exclude the category from their taste profile.

The exclusion applies retroactively, so kids and family music that users have already streamed will no longer count toward their Wrapped top song or artist.

“Parents love using Spotify to play music for their families,” Spotify said in a blog post . “But parents don’t always share the same taste as their young children – and playing music for your kids shouldn’t have to affect your own recommendations.”

The setting covers what Spotify calls kids and family music, which it said includes “the songs you play on repeat from your kids’ favorite animated movies, theme songs from family TV shows, nursery rhymes, and more.”

The toggle is rolling out globally on mobile to both Free and Premium users, and defaults to including kids and family music – meaning those streams keep shaping a listener’s recommendations unless they turn the setting off themselves.

“It’s set to include kids and family music in your taste profile by default, but you can turn it off anytime,” said Spotify .

Turning the setting off does not restrict access to the music itself, Spotify said.

“When you turn this setting off, you can still search for, listen to, and build playlists of kids and family music, but those streams won’t affect what Spotify suggests for you,” said Spotify .

Users can reach the control by tapping their profile picture, selecting Settings and privacy , then Content and display , and switching off Include kids and family music in taste profile .

Spotify said changes can take up to 48 hours to show up in personalized recommendations, and that the exclusion feeds through to Discover Weekly , Daily Mix , and Wrapped .

“This update is the latest step in our ongoing efforts to give parents and guardians more control over how they and their kids listen,” said Spotify .

The company said the toggle works alongside its managed accounts, which give listeners aged 13 and under – or the region-equivalent age – their own music library and year-end Wrapped , with parental controls that a parent or guardian can adjust as the child grows.

Spotify said managed accounts are available to parents and guardians on any plan, though only in select markets. It extended them beyond Premium Family to its free, ad-supported tier in May, and has been adding countries since.

The move also builds on controls that already let users exclude specific tracks or playlists from their taste profile, according to Spotify .

In March, the company introduced a beta feature called Taste Profile at SXSW , letting users see and edit the listening data behind their recommendations. It rolled out first in beta to Premium users in New Zealand .

Spotify said at the time that more than 80% of listeners say personalization is what they value most about the service.

Spotify has also been changing what reaches its recommendations at the catalog level.

In August, it said music from artist profiles carrying its new AI Persona badge would be kept out of its editorial and algorithmic recommendations by default, unless a listener chose to follow the profile. Spotify said at the time that the badge would begin appearing from mid-September.

Wrapped , the annual recap now covered by the new toggle, reached 200 million engaged users in its first 24 hours after launching last December – a 19% year-over-year increase.

Wrapped content was shared more than 500 million times over the same 24 hours, up 41% year-over-year, a figure that includes in-app shares, downloads, and screenshots.

Spotify counted 300 million Premium subscribers and 777 million monthly active users at the end of Q2 2026, according to its most recent quarterly results . Music Business Worldwide
