Brandon Flowers stopped by The Tonight Show to perform “An American Dream,” a wistful song off his new LP Thrasher . Appearing alongside his band and several back-up singers, Flowers gave a rousing performance of the country ballad, which reflects on whether money can buy happiness.

Flowers also sat down with host Jimmy Fallon to discuss Thrasher , which dropped last month. Some of the musicians who recorded on the album include Gillian Welch collaborator David Rawlings, pedal steel guitarist Bruce Bouton, and harmonica player Charlie McCoy, whose playing graced Bob Dylan’s Nashville LPs.

“Every day started with 45 minutes of storytelling,” Flowers told Fallon of recording the album. “I’m like, ‘The clock’s ticking, you guys are getting paid.’ But you also want to hear because Charlie McCoy is telling you Bob Dylan stories and he’s telling Roy Orbison stories and then Garth Brooks stories over here and Waylon Jennings stories, and it’s hard to get to work.”
