David Sylvian ’s new album The Distance Between the Killer and the Killing has been a long time coming. The erstwhile Japan singer‘s new LP, due February 27 on his new label NANOQ, compiles improvisational sessions recorded between 2012 and 2025 into a single, 46-minute instrumental. The original sessions saw Sylvian collaborate with an array of artists including Otomo Yoshihide, Jamie Drouin, Biliana Voutchkova, and one of his most consistent collaborators, the late Ryuichi Sakamoto.

Although NANOQ bills The Distance Between the Killer and the Killing as the official follow-up to Sylvian’s 2009 solo LP Manafon , he has shared a few reissues and compilations since then. Sylvian gathered his 21st-century non-album collaborations on the 2010 comp Sleepwalkers ; compiled 30 years worth of material on 2012’s A Victim of Stars: 1982-2012 ; and most recently, in 2019, reissued his first four solo albums on vinyl.
