Ed Sheeran's Gillette Stadium Shows Canceled Due to Severe Weather

Following a controversy involving opening act Macklemore that saw global pop star Ed Sheeran without support acts for his ongoing “Loop Tour,” Sheeran’s tour dates at Gillette Stadium in Massachusetts have been canceled with the venue and promoter citing the severe weather forecasted for the region this weekend.

“Due to the severe weather warnings in place in Boston and across New England throughout the weekend and following consultation with local officials, the promoter and tour have made the difficult decision to cancel the Ed Sheeran concerts at Gillette Stadium,” a statement read. The decision was made with the safety of fans, staff and everyone involved in the shows as the top priority. Refunds are available now at the point of purchase. Ticketholders who purchased through Ticketmaster will be automatically refunded.”

Sheeran was scheduled to play the stadium tonight, Sept. 25, and Saturday, Sept. 26. Oceans Calling festival in Ocean City, Maryland, was forced to cancel entirely due to weather at its beachfront site. The sold-out festival was topped by Dave Matthews Band, Twenty One Pilots and Mumford and Sons.

Gillette Stadium was the initial scene of the Macklemore/Sheeran controversy, when New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft reportedly objected to support artist Macklemore performing at the stadium, which Kraft owns and is home turf for the NFL team. Kraft reportedly organized other stadiums to take a similar stand against Macklemore, who has been known to speak in support of Palestine and during his set shows footage from Gaza and messages advocating for Palestinian freedom in the territory, which has been disputed over for decades.

Kraft confirmed publicly that he would not allow Gillette Stadium to host the Ed Sheeran concerts if Macklemore was performing, saying the stadium would not provide a platform for hate speech and saying Macklemore has a history of antisemitism.

After announcing the shows would go on without Macklemore, the tour’s additional support acts pulled out, with Finneas, Aaron Rowe, Lukas Graham, and Sheeran’s own backing band, Beoga, citing solidarity with Macklemore.

Macklemore released multiple lengthy statements in response, saying his comments are directed only at the Israeli government, and announcing his own “Free Palestine Tour” dates in Europe this week.

Sheeran continued his tour with a date in Philadelphia, where he addressed the controversy at length a nd expressed concern for his own safety in continuing the tour. While he opened the concert himself with no opening act, other artists did join him on stage.

The controversy brought to light renewed questions of free speech as well as the involvement of stakeholders within the complicated relationship between artist, promoter and venue , a rare and maybe unprecedented case of an artist’s (or support artist’s) political or personal beliefs causing a major disruption to an ongoing major tour.

Sheeran’s tour is set to continue Oct. 3 at Mercedes-Benz stadium in Atlanta.
