John Mellencamp’s New 50-Year Songbook Offers Intimate Look at His Creative Process

It’s more like John Mellencamp ’s private journal than a printed book. Out today (Sept. 29), John Mellencamp: The Songbook: 50 Years of Song and Poetry brings five decades of the musician’s lyrics and poetry to fans with personal photographs, handwritten drafts, notes and musical chords.

The foreword comes from Stephen King, who recalls first hearing “I Need a Lover” in a wet-wash laundry, when Mellencamp was still known as Johnny Cougar , and reflects on their later collaboration on the musical Ghost Brothers of Darkland County . The book’s rough-cut edges, coffee-stained pages, margin doodles and typewritten and handwritten passages make the volume feel like a stack of pages pulled straight from Mellencamp’s own archives. The result is an intimate look at the songwriter’s creative world.

More than a collection of lyrics, the “Jack & Diane” singer’s new songbook follows the artist’s development in the music industry since his start in the ’70s across periods of reinvention, activism and continued musical exploration. The pages bring together transcripts and notes behind songs like “Authority Song” and “Pink Houses,” with archival material that reveals how Mellencamp developed his ideas on the page.

Alongside the lyrics and poetry are photographs spanning his career, personal notes and visual details that make the book feel distinctly handmade. For longtime fans, musicians and collectors, the volume offers a close look at both the work and the process behind it.

This isn’t the first time the musician has released a book based on his creative work. Mellencamp’s publishing history includes the 1998 art book Mellencamp: Paintings and Reflections , which explored his work as a painter. In 2022, he followed it with John Mellencamp: American Paintings and Assemblages , a survey he curated himself featuring 170 artworks. His 2026 songbook continues that tradition, opening his archives to showcase lyrics, photographs, handwritten drafts and notes from his career.

I received my copy of the book and particularly love how it feels like a pile of notes gathered from Mellencamp’s storage boxes, stained with coffee and covered in doodles, as if we’re getting a glimpse inside the mind of a musician. The book is also beautifully designed, thanks to Rizzoli New York’s fine-art sensibility, making it an ideal coffee table book.
