Matt Berninger of The National Drops New EP "Type It Up," Vinyl Release Due in December

Matt Berninger has released a new EP, Type It Up , and put out a video for the single “Ask for Water.” Stream it below.

The five-track digital release from The National singer comes via Book/Concord Records and presents three original songs with two previously released covers. His renditions of New Order’s “Blue Monday,” which first came to listeners last year, and The Velvet Underground’s “Who Loves the Sun” have spots on Type It Up ’s tracklist as does his original “Martini Me Fatso,” a song released over the summer. A vinyl edition of the EP is scheduled for release December 4th and will feature a sixth acoustic live recording of “Martini Me Fatso.”

“These songs came out of the momentum and energy of the Get Sunk tour,” Berninger said in a statement. “I was changing lyrics and forms night after night, and we were getting real time feedback from audiences and social media comments. On the song ‘Type It Up’ (originally titled ‘Black Letter Font’), people were mishearing the lyric, ‘That would look good in a black letter font’ as ‘I would look good in a black leather thong,’ so I decided to swap the chorus. I’m more of a black linen suit guy.”

The video for “Ask For Water,” the EP’s central track, was directed by frequent Berninger collaborator Chris Sgroi.

Type It Up is Berninger’s third solo release after last year’s Get Sunk and 2020’s Serpentine Prison.
