College football rosters are constantly evolving, and the opening weeks of a season can quickly reveal both a team's strengths and areas that still need attention.

For coaching staffs, that means balancing the demands of winning now with planning for what comes next. Some of the answers to current roster questions might already be on the way through the next recruiting class.

That's why recruiting is more than simply accumulating talent. It's also about identifying prospects who fit future needs and can make an early impact. From blue-chip recruits to players flying under the radar, we identified one prospect in each of the nation's top classes who could contribute early and help shape the program's future. The order is based on current class rankings .

S Kamarui Dorsey

SC Next ESPN 300 rank: 22

The looming loss of experienced safeties Dalton Brooks and Marcus Ratcliffe could create major opportunities on the back end of A&M's defense. Dorsey's physicality, size, range and closing speed make him a ready-made day one safety contributor. As the No. 2 safety in the class, he also has exceptional ball skills. Dorsey's also a vocal communicator, which will benefit him if he's asked to step into a role quickly. The Aggies are reloading in the secondary with fellow top-10 ESPN 300 safety JayQuan Snell , a physical player who has a nasty downhill presence.

CB Xavier Hasan

SC Next ESPN 300 rank: 54

Leonard Moore could be the first defensive back selected in next year's NFL draft, leaving Notre Dame with a significant void to fill. Hasan, the top-rated defensive commit in the Irish's class, has the tools to compete for immediate playing time at cornerback. The 195-pound Hasan pairs good instincts with excellent top-end speed, including a verified 10.53-second 100-meter time, and already has the frame to hold up against college competition.

DE Rashad Streets

SC Next ESPN 300 rank: 35

As South Carolina's Dylan Stewart and former Oregon star Kayvon Thibodeaux showed, true freshmen edge rushers can make an immediate impact. Streets' high-energy play and length should allow him to contribute early. The No. 4-rated defensive end has a quick first step and knows how to convert speed to power against opposing tackles. That ability will take on even greater significance as Oregon tries to replace the production of Matayo Uiagalelei . The Ducks' lack of depth showed up as their quarterback pressure faded in the second half of their loss to Oklahoma State last weekend.

WR Easton Royal

SC Next ESPN 300 rank: 8

Texas is still locked in a recruiting battle to hang on to Royal, the No. 1-rated wide receiver in the 2027 class. The New Orleans native has the big-play ability to make an instant impact in Steve Sarkisian's offense. At 6 feet and just over 200 pounds, Royal has rare speed for his size, running a sub-4.4 40-yard dash and a 10.17-second 100-meter time. An elusive open-field runner, Royal is an all-around playmaker who could immediately change games for Texas, and he won't shy away from the challenge thanks to his supreme competitiveness and confidence.

ATH A'mir Sears

SC Next ESPN 300 rank: 25

South Florida product Malachi Toney was a breakout star for Miami in 2025 and Sears could follow a similar path. The top-rated athlete in the class is a true two-way threat who has backed up lofty comparisons to Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter with his play on the field. Sears has the length, speed and ball skills to contribute at receiver, cornerback or safety. Sears projects to the secondary, but his offensive ability could make a two-way role difficult to resist. Regardless of roster needs, Sears has the talent to contribute quickly to Miami's national title hunt.

LB Cooper Witten

SC Next ESPN 300 rank: 32

Though Oklahoma's offense stalled in a loss to Michigan, Brent Venables' teams always rely on stingy, championship-caliber defenses. The son of former NFL tight end and current Oklahoma tight ends coach Jason Witten, Cooper Witten lines up at safety but projects as a linebacker, with 4.56 speed that allows him to make plays from sideline to sideline. Witten consistently finds the ball and makes his presence felt as a run defender and in coverage. With veteran linebackers Kip Lewis and Owen Heinecke exhausting their eligibility, Witten has a path to make an early impact in Venables' defense in the mold of former Sooners standout Danny Stutsman .

WR Jamier Brown

SC Next ESPN 300 rank: 10

Ohio State's pipeline of elite receivers should continue with Brown, the No. 2 wide receiver in the SC Next Top 300, who has a chance to be one of the next great Buckeyes receivers. With several of their top producers potentially headed to the NFL after this season, Brown will join Chris Henry Jr ., the No. 1 receiver in the 2026 class, in a retooled receiver room. The Ohio native has blazing track speed, highlighted by a 10.35-second 100-meter time, and should give Ryan Day a different type of weapon in the Buckeyes' offense.

OT Maxwell Hiller

SC Next ESPN 300 rank: 3

The early signs from Gainesville show that new offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner is committed to running the football. Winning at the line of scrimmage is critical in the SEC, and Hiller brings a fierce demeanor up front and the necessary physicality to produce on the field. The No. 1-ranked offensive tackle in the class combines size and flexibility with the toughness and competitiveness that should fit well with coach Jon Sumrall. The Gators could lose depth along the offensive line this offseason, giving Hiller an opportunity to compete early and quickly elevate the group.

DE James Pace

SC Next ESPN 300 rank: 83

Toughness is a staple of defenses across the SEC, and D.J. Durkin's group at Auburn is no different, even icing the season opener against Baylor with a winning stop. Remaining stout on defense starts up front and Pace embodies the Tigers' mentality perfectly. He's a relentless edge rusher at the point of attack and plays with a high motor. He can win with a combination of speed and power, and once disengaged, closes in a hurry. Pace should fit well with the aggressive style Auburn wants to play defensively and Durkin's reliance on scheme-versatile front-seven attackers.

DT Jalen Brewster

SC Next ESPN 300 rank: 1

Brewster, who recently transferred to Georgia power Buford High School from Texas' Cedar Hill High, is the highest-rated recruit in Texas Tech history and the No. 1 overall player in the SC Next Top 300. He also arrives at a position of need, with the Red Raiders set to lose several veterans on the defensive interior. Brewster has the size, quick get-off and power at the point of attack to compete immediately. His combination of talent and opportunity gives him a chance to quickly become a game-wrecker up front.

TE Colt Lumpris

SC Next ESPN 300 rank: 87

If Bryce Underwood doesn't improve as a passer, incoming 2027 QB Kamden Lopati , the No. 36 player in the class, is a name to watch. Lumpris has a clearer path to an early role. Tight end has yet to feature prominently in Jason Beck's offense at Michigan, but first-year player Mason Bonner has created some buzz and it could develop into more of a focal point. A former Alabama commit, Lumpris is 6-foot-6, 240 pounds with excellent body control and ball skills. He has good play speed, a knack for creating space and can win contested matchups. Those traits could help elevate Michigan's passing attack.

RB Kemon Spell

SC Next ESPN 300 rank: 7

Nate Frazier could be off to the NFL after this season and Spell might already be physically ready to challenge veteran Georgia backup Chauncey Bowens for carries, so there's an immediate opportunity. Spell, the top-ranked running back in the class, projects as a versatile, Sony Michel -type option for the Bulldogs. He has third-down back capabilities as a pass catcher and blocker but also has powerful, carry-the-load type qualities. Spell has 10.8-second 100-meter speed and plays fast in pads, clocking in at 22.2 mph. The future Bulldog has NFL first-round physical traits.

S Tory Pittman III

SC Next ESPN 300 rank: 31

Nebraska might have found its future signal-caller in Trae Taylor III , but Pittman profiles as a key in-state keep for the Cornhuskers. The top-five safety has good length and room to add strength to support his physical style. Pittman possesses elite range, consistently reaching over 21 mph during games, along with polished ball skills in coverage. He also won't hesitate to run the alley and deliver a hit. With several fourth- and fifth-year players contributing at safety, Pittman could be needed early anywhere in the back seven.

OT J.J. Brown

Clemson was dominated up front against LSU in Week 1. Though it's difficult to expect a true freshman offensive lineman to come in and start immediately, the Tigers' offensive line is in need of reinforcements and is already working in some underclassmen. Brown, who plays for Parkview High School in Georgia, is Clemson's highest-rated offensive line commit. He possesses a great frame and has the athleticism and feet to play on the edge. He'll need to continue to blend his physical tools with more consistent technique, but Brown has plenty of upside and tenacity, and at the very least, should help raise the floor of the room.

CB JuJu Johnson

SC Next ESPN 300 rank: 27

Bob Chesney scored an important local recruiting win by landing Johnson out of Long Beach Poly High School and keeping him close to home. Johnson is an explosive player who has run a 10.5-second 100-meter time and cleared 6-foot-2 in the high jump. He has a knack for creating turnovers at cornerback but is also an accomplished two-way player who makes plays at receiver. Though Johnson projects to play defense at the next level, that offensive versatility could be a valuable asset for the Bruins.

TE Ahmad Hudson

SC Next ESPN 300 rank: 23

With Trey'Dez Green 's NFL decision looming at the end of the season, Hudson is an important commit for Lane Kiffin and the Tigers. Hudson draws similarities to Green, with both hailing from Louisiana, playing two sports and possessing imposing size. At 6-foot-6, Hudson creates mismatches with his size and elite ball skills. He is an extremely fluid player -- he's also a top-20 basketball recruit -- who can change direction and run precise routes. Hudson should help the Tigers' offense continue without missing a beat.

DT Mitchell Turner

SC Next ESPN 300 rank: 120

Retooling the defensive interior will be important for Ole Miss as veterans such as Jamarious Brown and Will Echoles get deeper into their careers. The Rebels have three stout defensive tackle commits in the SC Next Top 300 in Ben'Jarvius Shumaker , Jamarkus Pittman and Turner, but Turner projects to be the first contributor. He has the versatility to play on the edge or move inside, combining good bend and quickness with solid hand usage for a young player. Turner also plays with a high motor and holds up against the run, giving him the tools to be productive in Pete Golding's landshark defense.

S Honor Fa'alave-Johnson

SC Next ESPN 300 rank: 20

The Trojans have a veteran group of safeties this season, but that will not be the case entering 2027. Though the portal will be an option to add experience, five-star Fa'alave-Johnson, USC's highest-rated commit, fits that need. The two-way standout has the talent to be effective on both sides of the ball. Fa'alave-Johnson combines 10.6-second 100-meter speed with strong football instincts. Even if USC brings in transfers, Fa'alave-Johnson has the talent to make an early impact.
