New ‘Sense & Sensibility’ Adaptation Features 18th-Century English Folk Soundtrack

The new Sense & Sensibility has arrived in UK cinemas, with Daisy Edgar-Jones and Esmé Creed-Miles taking on Jane Austen’s Dashwood sisters – but what songs are included? Find out below.

Directed by Georgia Oakley and adapted by novelist Diana Reid, the latest version of Austen’s 1811 novel casts Edgar-Jones as the restrained Elinor Dashwood and Creed-Miles as her more impulsive younger sister Marianne.

The story follows the family after the death of Mr Dashwood leaves the women facing greatly reduced circumstances and a move to a cottage in Devon, where Elinor and Marianne become entangled in complicated relationships with Edward Ferrars (George MacKay), John Willoughby (Frank Dillane) and Colonel Brandon (Herbert Nordrum).

The film also stars Caitríona Balfe, Fiona Shaw, Stacy Martin and Tom Brooke, and was released in UK cinemas on September 25.

What songs are on the ‘Sense & Sensibility’ soundtrack?

The film does not use a soundtrack built around modern pop songs or recognisable present-day covers. Instead, music supervisor Connie Farr sourced and specially recorded English folk songs from the 18th century to fit the film’s late-1790s setting.

The Fibonacci Quartet perform in the movie itself and feature on its soundtrack, while Graham McCusker served as music director and pianist.

Who composed the ‘Sense & Sensibility’ score?

The original music was written by composer Roger Goula, whose previous screen work includes All That Breathes , The Frankenstein Chronicles and Next Goal Wins .

Music supervisor Connie Farr, music coordinator GeorgiaMae Bromley and music director Graham McCusker oversaw the period music, while Hugh Brunt served as conductor and lead orchestrator on the score.

Oakley has also explained that much of the finished score grew unusually directly out of Goula’s first responses to the footage. Speaking at a Soundtracking event with Edith Bowman, she said that around 80 per cent of the musical sketches Goula produced while watching early rushes ended up being used in the finished film.

The result is deliberately different from the 1995 Ang Lee adaptation, whose Oscar-nominated Patrick Doyle score included songs such as ‘Weep You No More Sad Fountains’.
