SoFi Stadium Upgrades Audio and Visuals for Enhanced Fan Experience

Los Angeles Chargers and Rams fans may have noticed something a little different about their experience at SoFi Stadium over the past month.

The NFL venue in Inglewood recently completed extensive technical upgrades to improve the stadium’s audio and broadcast experience. Fans will not only hear sound but feel it with a d&b audiotechnik Soundscape system that lets audio engineers direct sound to specific parts of the bowl.

And the sound is matched with state-of-the-art visual upgrades. SoFi Stadium refreshed its live production environment with a new production control room along with advanced lighting controls and expanded fiber infrastructure, allowing stadium engineers to deliver a more immersive experience for football fans.

Josh Mark, vice president of broadcast operations and production at SoFi Stadium, tells Pollstar the technology is like surround sound in one’s home, “but on such a larger scale.” They used the upgraded audio system for the first time during the Chargers’ first preseason game, and the team and fans certainly felt it when the audio thunder rolled across the stadium.

“Hearing that thunder coming from all over the stadium made you feel like it was all around you,” Mark said. “It really does make these experiences better.”

The experience is even better when it’s paired with visuals. In partnership with Ross Video, systems integrator Diversified and broadcast partners, the stadium’s iconic Infinity Screen, a massive, dual-sided 360-degree digital canvas, was refreshed to deliver a more robust Xpression Tessera UHD system.

The refresh, which customizes every layer of the stadium’s live production environment, took nearly two years; to support the new technology across Hollywood Park, the engineers reimagined the venue’s control infrastructure and added a third production control room, allowing the team to run multiple events simultaneously.

One of the biggest upgrades was the main control room, which now has advanced Ross Video TD5L switching panels, giving directors remarkable control when managing multiple cameras and video layers.

With the upgraded graphics on the Infinity Screen, the largest screen ever built for sports, and spatial sound, SoFi engineers can elevate the visual storytelling throughout the football game. Mark said the Rams’ new graphics package has a depth that gives it a three-dimensional look, and it can provide guests with an informative and entertaining production at a live sporting event.

“You come to the stadium, you have 20-plus cameras, replay, all the stats and information. Plus, you have the whole entertainment side of it, and you have the game,” Mark said. “So it’s like you’re getting a broadcast that’s just as good as a network broadcast or even better because you got a lot bigger TV than you do at your home. But you also have the real game right in front of you. You have 70,000-plus fans all cheering and having a good time with you. It just makes for a great, fun experience.”

Mark admits FIFA’s World Cup matches at SoFi Stadium in the summer helped upgrade the video and sound system, but the main drivers were the upcoming major events: Super Bowl LXI on Feb. 14 and the Olympics in 2028.

“The day FIFA finished, we started jumping in on a lot of this work to get it done for the football season,” Mark said. “Technology-wise, if you saw the fan experience with FIFA, the crowd had a great time. All these improvements that we’re doing, people may not see them physically, but they’re going to feel them. They’re going to hear the sound with the spatial audio; they’re going to see the additional data on the screen, 3D animation and so many things we weren’t able to do before.”
