In Come with Me , Theo Rossi plays Simon, a working man whose troubles pile up as a radio personality played by Ron Perlman begins to shape the way he sees the world. The Sons of Anarchy actor and producer spoke with Kyle Meredith about making the film, tracing Simon’s unraveling without reducing him to a political label, and taking charge of the roles he wants to play. Rossi was drawn to the question behind the story: What happens before a troubled person becomes a headline? “We were showing a slice of life,” he says, “not just the news story but how did we get to the news story?” Simon has a fiancée, a job, and a best friend, but a succession of setbacks leaves him looking for something to believe in. Rossi knew the film might make audiences uncomfortable — that was part of the appeal. “I want people to argue over it. I want people to have an issue with it because that means they feel something,” he says.
Those arguments have already started. Rossi says people who read the script came away with opposing takes on its politics and its treatment of guns. He hopes viewers will look closely at Simon before deciding what to call him. “In this algorithmic society where your beliefs are reconfirmed, even if they might be a little off or dare I say toxic, you really need to go outside your bubble for a minute,” he says. The conversation also turns to how Rossi tracked Simon’s decline while shooting scenes out of order, the freedom he has found in producing, and Maid of Dishonor , the upcoming romantic comedy he made with Emily Hampshire.
