HONG KONG EXPANSION: Kai Tak in the works for Saudi Arabia property.
In April, Andrew Kam Min-Ho assumed the position of Chief Executive Officer of Kai Tak Sports Park Limited, taking over management of Hong Kong’s new $4 billion multi-purpose sports and entertainment venue from John Sharkey, who led the stadium project from its inception.
“Kai Tak Sport Park is a game changer for Hong Kong’s tourism and mega-events economy,” says Kam, and he should know. Under Kam’s management from 2008 to 2016, Hong Kong Disneyland Resort boldly emerged from the red where it had mostly lingered since opening in 2005. He then managed China’s Wanda Theme Entertainment Company, which controlled a diverse portfolio of leisure properties, ranging from ski resorts and golf clubs to theme parks and live performance venues throughout mainland China.
“I also signed a memorandum of understanding with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to develop a property for China’s largest ocean park company, the first Chinese theme park company to successfully expand overseas.”
These were important milestones, not only for his career but for Hong Kong and China tourism, and Kai Tak Sports Park belongs on the same growth continuum. “Being given the opportunity to manage an already successful venue, my challenge is to drive this world-class Hong Kong SAR Government-owned property to become even more successful and achieve its intended goals,” says Kam.
Chief among those goals is maintaining KTSP as “Asia’s best sports and entertainment destination,” a status established only nine months after KTSP opened, when it was ranked by Pollstar as No. 3 in global annual ticket sales. While Kam’s credo for success in his chosen field is to “never stay inside my comfort zone,” he also recognizes that, “arrogance and ego” will get you nowhere. “We are committed to launching initiatives that improve operational efficiency, as well as the quality of our games and concerts,” he says, “while offering a hospitality standard that exceeds the expectations of both our contractors and our guests.”
