Sean “Diddy” Combs may not be getting out of prison as soon as expected after a Dateline segment this week detailed the luxe lifestyle the rap mogul has allegedly built behind bars, complete with a team of fellow inmates treated like his personal staff.
Since arriving at Fort Dix in October 2025 after more than a year at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, Combs has seen his projected release date bounce around the front half of the 2028 calendar, shifting several times between January and June. It now stands at Jan. 21, 2028. In that time, he has entered a drug rehabilitation program at the New Jersey facility, has been involved in a fight with another inmate, and violated several prison rules while serving a 50-month sentence for Mann Act violations .

A report from NBC News’ Dateline this week indicated that the former near-billionaire Bad Boy founder had extended his luxurious lifestyle to his prison cell, where a crew of incarcerated men has been receiving funds in their commissary accounts in exchange for doing basic chores like making the rapper’s bed, cleaning his toilet and shower, and giving him massages. Some inmates also reportedly cooked him meals outside of the prison’s daily menu. Dateline ‘s reporter said she spoke with several inmate sources inside Fort Dix.
One inmate at the federal facility showed NBC News an Instagram account that Combs allegedly had been using to communicate with contacts outside the prison. The profile has no profile picture, but it is followed by Combs’ PR representative.
Despite his stint in prison rehab, Combs reportedly has had regular access to alcohol, the antidepressant Remeron, a cell phone, and a tablet, none of which inmates are permitted to have without authorization. The Bureau of Prisons has a policy of not commenting on current inmates.
After an eight-week trial over the summer of 2025, Combs was convicted of two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution and acquitted of the more serious racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking charges. After a sentencing hearing in a New York federal courtroom in which his life was laid bare, he was handed 50 months. He and his attorneys are awaiting a decision on their appeal of the sentence.
But their client hasn’t been making a case for himself from the inside. TMZ reported on July 24 that Combs was allegedly involved in a fight with another inmate over an insult and was then placed in solitary confinement. The skirmish reportedly pushed his release date back about a month, to Feb. 20, 2028.
Combs’ rep did not respond to a request from The Hollywood Reporter on Friday for comment on the Dateline story. Asked about the solitary confinement reports, the rep said he is unable to confirm Combs’ movement out of the general population at Fort Dix and into “the hole,” telling THR , “I can’t know where he is. BOP doesn’t keep us apprised.”
