Duncan Sheik, ‘Spring Awakening’ Composer, in Critical but Stable Condition

Spring Awakening composer Duncan Sheik has been hospitalized in “critical but stable condition,” according to his family.

A post on his Instagram Wednesday states that “Out of respect for Duncan and our family, we will not be sharing any further medical details at this time.”

“We kindly ask for privacy during this incredibly difficult time and will provide updates when appropriate,” the statement continues. “Thank you for the continued love and support.”

Sheik, 56, is also known for his 1996 debut song “Barely Breathing,” which led to a Grammy nomination for best male pop vocal performance in 1998. He has released nine studio albums.

He wrote the music for Spring Awakening, with Steven Sater providing lyrics for the musical which premiered on Broadway in 2006, starring Lea Michele and Jonathan Groff. The Broadway production won Tony Awards for best orchestrations, best original score and best musical, as well as a Grammy for best musical theater album. The alt-rock and folk musical is based on the 1891 German play by Frank Wedekind, which sees teenagers in the late 1800s discovering their sexuality. A 2022 documentary features the original cast reuniting for a reunion concert.

A revival of the musical, directed by Danya Taymor, is planned for Off-Broadway this fall, at Studio Seaview, with previews set to start Nov. 27, and an official opening set for Dec. 17.
