Guillermo del Toro Nearly Directed a BioShock Film

Guillermo del Toro has finally confirmed the long-standing rumours that he was in talks to make a movie adaptation of first-person sci-fi shooter BioShock .

Del Toro has a rocky relationship with video games. His survival horror game Insane was cancelled in 2012 after two years of development and he worked with Hideo Kojima on P.T. , a playable teaser for a cancelled Silent Hill game. “ I’m the albatross of video gaming ,” he said back in 2021.

Now, the acclaimed director has confirmed that he had a “disastrous” experience trying to make a movie adaptation of 2007’s BioShock .

“You know, I tried [to get it made],” he told IGN . “We had a very contentious call about a couple of games. I find that the dynamics of a video game are very different than a movie. They may be cinematically similar in terms of the camera moving and this and that, but the storytelling is very different, because you’re not solving puzzles. You’re not assembling. We had a couple of calls [about adapting BioShock ] and they are probably some of the most disastrous calls I’ve ever had.”

He went on to say that he “never” wants to get involved in video game development again, after his experience on Insane .

Speaking about his favourite games  on the Happy Sad Confused Podcast last year, del Toro said: “The most immersive has to be BioShock and Death Stranding . The best universe is Metal Gear Solid . The one that I’m really good at and love is Left 4 Dead . I like the big, sandbox games like Red Dead Redemption . Shadow Of The Colossus is a masterpiece. It’s atmospheric and poetic and tragic. And some of the God Of War games are just some of the best cinematic experiences I’ve ever had.” This year he confirmed that he still plays Angry Birds every day .

Angry Birds was added to the World Video Game Hall Of Fame in May alongside the original Silent Hill, FIFA International Soccer and Dragon Quest .
