Kate Nash Unveils New Album ‘Cailín’ Alongside Reproductive Rights Anthem ‘Spilt Milk’

Kate Nash has announced a new album, ‘Cailín’, and released a powerful new single, ‘Spilt Milk’. Find all the details below.

Back in April, Nash shared a poignant cover of Sinéad O’Connor ’s ‘Famine’. At the time, she said she had been inspired by the phrase ‘The English can’t remember history, while the Irish can’t forget it,’ and had been delving into her Irish heritage.

Now, she’s announced that the track is part of her upcoming album ‘Cailín’, which will be released on January 22 via Kill Rock Stars. You can pre-order it here .

News of the album comes alongside a new single ‘Spilt Milk’, which explores the current reproductive rights crisis facing women and minority groups. It was initially written about abortion law in Ireland, before they repealed the 8th in 2018.

“It’s about not having control over your own body, not being listened to and feeling like the powers that be are getting bigger, scarier and more crushing,” she explained. “With the overturning of Roe v Wade and women’s sexual health rights being rolled back in the US this song feels pertinent to today. The song questions why the female voice is so ignored and why we’d be expected to accept this.”

‘Spilt Milk’ comes alongside a Tom Beard-directed music video, which you can watch below.

As with the two singles, the album will explore Irish culture. Nash holds dual nationality and has spent time exploring her Irish heritage. Per a press release, ‘Cailín’ will see Nash intertwine punk protest songs with trad music, and explore themes of family, forgiveness, love, colonialism, inequality, religion, and internalised shame.

Speaking on the album, Nash said: “All my earliest musical memories were in Ireland: live music in the pub, going to Sharon Shannon gigs, seeing the best accordion player you’ve ever seen and it’s a bored-looking eight-year-old boy in a puffer jacket. There’s a natural respect for musicians as it’s embedded into the fabric of everyday life.”

News of the album follows Nash making headlines at the end of 2024 when she  launched her ‘Butts for Tour Buses’ campaign , which saw her join OnlyFans to protest the music industry and help raise money for her  UK and European tour.

She then took things one step further, and used the  “bum on the back of a fire truck” campaign to head to the London offices of Live Nation, Spotify , and the Houses of Parliament to protest the challenges facing both new and established artists.

“The reality is that touring is making losses, not profit,”  she told  NME  about the push to raise awareness and spark change . “The grassroots is in absolute crisis. Venues are closing, festivals are being cancelled. People are thinking, ‘What’s the point in starting a band?’ and ‘How can I as an artist carry on?’”

Speaking about the changes she hopes to see with the campaign, she added: “We need the government’s help, and we need it now. Lisa Nandy, the secretary of state for Culture, Media and Sport, has actually been amazing speaking to Live Nation and has been talking a lot about music in Parliament. Last month, she said to the music industry: ‘If you don’t do something, we’re going to be forced to act’.

“The most important thing an artist can do is fight for a better future. The one thing I’d really like to leave behind is to have made some kind of positive dent on this industry. I think I can make that dent with my bum.”
