Matt Lucas Dispels ‘Little Britain’ Reboot Talk

Matt Lucas has debunked rumours of a Little Britain reboot on social media.

The comedian fronted the BBC Three sketch show between 2003 and 2006 alongside David Walliams, having originated it as a BBC Radio 4 series.

A report from the Daily Mail surfaced last week claiming that the show could be poised for a comeback, with a likelihood it could be picked up by a streamer rather than return to the BBC.

However, Lucas has denied the claims, sharing in a post on X: “I don’t know where this story has come from but there are no plans to reboot this show.”

Little Britain has stirred controversy in recent times, with the show removed from BBC iPlayer in 2020 due to sketches deemed culturally insensitive.

“David and I have both spoken publicly in recent years of our regret that we played characters of other races,” Lucas said at the time . “Once again we want to make it clear that it was wrong; we are very sorry.”

The series was later re-added in 2022 with a number of edits to “better reflect the changes in the cultural landscape over the last 20 years since the show was first made”.

Last week, 11 sketches from That Mitchell & Webb Look were removed from BBC iPlayer as the show was re-added to mark its 20th anniversary, the broadcaster explaining that they “have included the ones that still work today and not the ones that don’t”.

Meanwhile, last year Lucas apologised to Millie Bobby Brown after comparing the Stranger Things star to his Little Britain character Vicky Pollard over a photo of her with a pink jacket and her hair in a high ponytail.

After Brown criticised media coverage of her appearance, singling out Lucas, the comedian shared: “Dear Millie, I just saw your post and wanted to respond, and provide some context. Nearly 25 years ago I co-wrote and appeared in a sketch show called Little Britain .

“There was a character in it called Vicky Pollard, who had blonde hair and always wore a pink top, and in the photo you has blonde hair and a pink top so I pointed out the similarity by posting one of her catchphrases”.

He added: “I thought you looked terrific and I was mortified when the press wrote that I ‘slammed’ you, firstly because that’s not my style, and secondly I think you’re brilliant. I would not have posted it if I had thought it would have upset you but I realise it has and for that I apologise. Matt x.”
