Netflix Unveils New Adaptations for 'Sonic,' 'Crazy Taxi,' and 'Stranger Than Heaven'

Sega has confirmed a new partnership with Netflix , with a trio of adaptations heading to the streamer in the near future.

The first project to come from the new Sega and Netflix deal is a live-action movie take on hit arcade racing franchise Crazy Taxi . The “hilariously crazy” film will be written by Dan Gregor and Doug Mand, the duo responsible for the 2025 reboot of The Naked Gu n , who “will bring the game’s chaotic, comedic spirit to the adaptation.” A reboot of Crazy Taxi is set to launch next year.

Netflix are also working on an animated Sonic the Hedgehog series and a movie adaptation of Stranger Than Heaven , the upcoming Like A Dragon spin-off that stars Snoop Dogg and the likeness of Tupac Shakur .

According to a press release , the Sonic series “will present Sonic and his friends as heroes for an upper pre-school audience – a high-voltage, comedic, yet emotionally grounded series built for kids who want to feel a little edge, a little attitude, and a lot of ‘that’s my crew’ wish fulfilment,” while the “badass action drama” Stranger Than Heaven film will “bring a new lens to the epic world and franchise.”

Release dates for all three projects are still to be confirmed.

“Great games already have what every adaptation is chasing — characters people love, worlds they know by heart, and fandoms that show up,” said Netflix’s Brandon Riegg.. “With Crazy Taxi , Sonic , and Stranger Than Heaven , we get to work across three completely different eras of Sega’s catalog, celebrating everything fans love, while introducing them to new audiences.”

“We’ve watched Netflix take on stories across every kind of format and treat each one with real craft, and seeing that same dedication applied to Sonic , Crazy Taxi and Stranger Than Heaven is something we at Sega are incredibly proud to be a part of,” said Sega president Shuji Utsumi. “The fandoms of these games deserve storytelling that honors what makes each title special, and we know Netflix shares that commitment. This is just the start of what these titles can become.”

Netflix is currently working on live-action adaptations of Assassin’s Creed and Gears Of War alongside an Overcooked -inspired competition series and shows based on Minecraft , Magic: The Gathering and Clash Of Clans .

In other news, Nintendo Switch 2 owners will now have to wait until next year to play 007 First Light  as developers work on “polishing” the game’s performance .
