With Mexico City cemented as one of the world’s top live music destinations, another Mexican market is ready to join the nation’s capital as a major player in the industry.

Guadalajara, already the country’s second-largest market, upped its game with Coliseo GNP Seguros, a 30,000-capacity stadium that celebrated its grand opening Tuesday night with Michael Bublé.

The Canadian crooner replaced Rod Stewart, who had to cancel due to a medical procedure, as the venue opener less than a month ago, and it turned out to be the right move for Mexican promoter OCESA. Bublé last performed in the area three years ago and charmed the crowd with his Spanish. The artist’s setlist, comprising original songs and covers of classics like “L-O-V-E,” “Moondance” and “You Were Always on My Mind,” had the audience on its feet and singing along to timeless tunes.

In partnership with the Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara, a prominent university in the city, and GNP Seguros, OCESA renovated the soccer stadium previously known as Estadio 3 de Marzo. The venue has a rich history (55 years) in the city, having hosted World Cup matches in 1986 as well as acts such as Luis Miguel, Roger Waters and Shakira.

“Jalisco holds a special place in Mexico’s cultural history, and Guadalajara is an indispensable city within the national live entertainment circuit,” Alejandro Soberón, CEO of OCESA, said in a press conference Tuesday. “The new Coliseo GNP Seguros represents a long-term partnership between OCESA, GNP Seguros and the Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara to continue creating the conditions that will allow more artists to include Guadalajara in their tours, more visitors to come to Jalisco, and the economic benefits generated by each show to reach hotels, restaurants, transportation, retail, tourism and local suppliers.”

Designers behind the renovations weren’t looking to expand capacity to sell more tickets, but rather to use whatever space was available to enhance the guest experience. All seats have been modernized and numbered, and the venue now offers various elevated experiences, giving fans more options when purchasing tickets.

OCESA focused on improving foot traffic around the stadium itself to make the venue more accessible and easier to navigate. After scanning their ticket near the venue, fans are welcomed by multiple activations in the plaza, where they can socialize before entering the stadium.

Hospitality spaces were a major part of the renovation. Designers used underutilized spaces within the structure to build food and beverage stands, freeing up space outside the venue for bathroom construction. VIP areas with tables and seats were constructed within the venue to serve guests with premium seats, giving them space to congregate and enjoy expanded food and beverage offerings. Oak View Group Hospitality has a partnership with OCESA and handles food and beverage for the new venue.

Coliseo GNP Seguros is one of the largest venues in the Guadalajara metropolitan area, behind Estadio Akron and Estadio Jalisco. But what distinguishes OCESA’s latest project from the other stadiums is not only its capacity—the others have a capacity of 48,000 or more—but also its sightlines. Coliseo is less than 40 feet tall, delivering an intimate experience and giving those seated in the final row or in suites a good view of the stage.

OCESA honored the Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara’s wish to preserve the venue’s history and the university’s competitive spirit by keeping the field intact. Although the university’s professional soccer team is no longer in Mexico’s top division, Coliseo GNP Seguros can still host sporting events.

“For 55 years, this venue has played a key role in the history of our University and of Guadalajara itself. Its transformation allows us to preserve that legacy while giving it a new projection as a space where sports, culture and music will continue to come together to promote the well-being and progress of our community,” said Antonio Leaño Reyes, rector of the Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara. “It is deeply meaningful for the UAG that this story continues to be written, as it allows us to remain true to our essence of always striving to go further and to transcend.”

The venue has six other shows booked for the remainder of 2026, including Natanael Cano, one of Mexico’s biggest artists, on Sept. 25. Latin Grammy winner Alejandro Sanz is performing at Coliseo GNP Seguros in October, followed by a show headlined by Panteón Rococó and Los Auténticos Caligaris. December programming includes Yuridia, Gorillaz and Los Bukis.
